Big Seventh Inning Downs Baseball in 7-5 Setback to Chestnut Hill

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Ryan Weller (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown Area) and Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth to give Kutztown a two-run lead, but Chestnut Hill came back with six runs in the top of the seventh and would go on to hand the Golden Bears a 7-5 loss in their non-conference finale at North Campus Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Just Afflerbach drew a one-out walk in bottom of the sixth and after the second out was recorded, Weller roped his double deep over the centerfielder's head to score pinch-runner Ben Eppley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Frederick C.C.)). Rottet then came to the plate and sent the second pitch he saw the left-center gap to give KU a two-run lead.

Chestnut Hill (20-19-1) sent 10 hitters to the plate in the top of the seventh though, beginning with back-to-back singles. After a balk and groundout scored the first two runs to tie the game, the Griffins did the bulk of their damage with four two-out runs. Following a wild pitch and a single to make the score 5-3, the big play came on an infield single in which a runner on second came all the way around to score to double the lead to 7-3.

Kutztown (15-30) cut the deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in both the eighth and the ninth, but both times the Maroon and Gold could not get the tying run on base.

Kevin Sell (Mertztown, Pa./Brandywine Heights), Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish (Ephrata, Pa./Ephrata), Anthony Atticks (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township (Harford C.C.)) and David Brown (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each had scoreless appearances for KU on Wednesday.

Fogarty Harnish did not allow a hit in his two innings of work, while Atticks did not surrender a base knock in the eighth.

Starter Peter Masterson (Park Ridge, N.J./Park Ridge) stuck out four in his two innings, allowing one earned run on two hits.

Rottet and Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) each finished the day 2-for-4. In addition to the RBI double, Rottet also scored twice, stole a base and was hit by a pitch.

Weller and Brady Carras (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) also reached base twice. Weller was hit by a pitch in the at-bat after his RBI double, while Carras walked and had an RBI double that opened the scoring in the bottom of the first.

After Carras' RBI double in the first scored Rottet, who had led off by getting hit by a pitch, Chestnut Hill quickly evened the score at 1-1 with an RBI single in the top of the second.

Please note that due to rain in the forecast on Friday, the Kutztown University baseball team has moved up its final home games of the season against Bloomsburg University to Thursday, May 4. Action at North Campus Field begins at 1 p.m.
