KUTZTOWN, Pa. – With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh,
Joe Santospago (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Mercer County C.C.)) doubled with one out to eventually extend the inning for
Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan),
who sent the game-winning, two-out RBI double over the right fielder's head to give the Kutztown University baseball team a walkoff victory over Bloomsburg in its home-finale at North Campus Field on Thursday evening.
The walkoff salvaged a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader split for KU, who dropped another close affair, 1-3, in the opener.
Santospago's and Zebrowski's seventh inning hits gave them each two for the nightcap. Santospago had also doubled earlier, while Zebrowski's scored Kutztown's opening run on
Nick Lafferty (Croydon, Pa./Archbishop Wood)'s RBI single in the third.
Anthony DeVito (Philadelphia, Pa./Central (Mercer County C.C.)) picked up the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless frames. He allowed just one hit and struck out one without walking a batter. The junior stranded a runner on third with one out in the top of the seventh by inducing an infield popup before freezing the final batter he faced with a strike three call.
DeVito relieved
Matt Matricardi (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin), who came on to strand a runner on second with two outs in the top of the fifth after Bloomsburg had just tied the game with an RBI double. He then got the first out of the sixth.
Starter
Ryan Clow (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) pitched 4.2 scoreless innings before surrendering the two-out RBI double in the fifth. It was just the fourth hit he had allowed. The senior struck out four in his final appearance at North Campus Field.
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) became the first Golden Bear with three doubles in a game in two seasons in the opener. He finished a perfect 3-for-3 with KU's only run when Lafferty drove him in with an RBI single in the sixth.
Game one starter
Anthony Atticks (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township (Harford C.C.)) gave up just four hits over his five innings, but four hit batters and three walks played a major role in leading to three earned runs.
Doug Conrad (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown West (Clarion)) came on to throw a scoreless sixth and seventh, in which he allowed two hits with two strikeouts.
Atticks and Bloomsburg starter Ashton Raines dueled through four scoreless innings in game one, with neither team advancing a runner past second base.
Action picked up in the fifth with Bloomsburg (22-24-1, 9-16-1 PSAC) getting its first three hitters on base, the third of which singled when attempting to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Two hit batters drove in the first two runs before an error allowed the third one to come in. With the bases still loaded with one away, Atticks was able to limit the damage by getting the final two outs.
Kutztown (16-31, 5-21) was able to get one back in the sixth with Lafferty's two-out RBI single driving in Rottet after he had led off with one of his three doubles, but the Maroon and Gold could not advance another runner into scoring position over their final four outs.
KU will end its season with one final 1 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday at Bloomsburg.
