Golden Bears Suffer Close Defeat against One-Loss Slippery Rock, 5-3

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team dropped a tightly-contested battle to Slippery Rock University, 5-3 on Friday, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

It marks the fewest goals allowed in a loss for KU since the program reestablished in 2008.

The game started out with a very slow pace, attributed to the sub-par weather conditions the athletes were thrown in to.

It was not until 12:49 left in the first half that the game had its first goal, which was scored by Slippery Rock.

The Golden Bears responded late in the half with two goals within 3:17 of each other to enter the second half with a 2-1 advantage.

Slippery Rock responded early in the half and found the equalizer with 26:16 left to play. Slippery rock went on to take a 3-2 advantage six minutes later.

With 9:15 left in regulation, Kutztown tallied its own equalizer to bring the score to 3-3. Unfortunately, Slippery Rock once again took the lead with 4:26 left in the game.

The Golden Bears fought valiantly down the stretch but Slippery Rock fought harder, tacking on a late insurance goal which ultimately ended the contest with a score of 5-3.

Kutztown's offense was paced by Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic), Madison Carlucci (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) and Emily Leeb (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow), who all scored one goal apiece. Gabriele also tallied an assist.

Abby Cox (York, Pa./West York) finished the contest with a career- and game-high six groundballs. She also tallied 10 saves.

Slippery Rock now improves its record to 9-1, 4-1 PSAC on the season. They are currently second in the PSAC standings.

The Golden Bears will stay out West as they will travel to Edinboro University to face the Fighting Scots in conference-play on Saturday, April 8. The game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
