PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Chicago Bears used their fifth-round selection – 147th overall - on Kutztown University's own
Jordan Morgan (Philadelphia, Pa./Parkway Northwest) in the 2017 NFL Draft Saturday afternoon outside of the Philadelphia Art Museum and in front of Morgan's hometown fans.
Morgan is the fourth player in school history to be selected in the NFL Draft. The last Golden Bear to be drafted into the NFL was linebacker John Mobley, who was selected in the first round of the 1996 draft by the Denver Broncos.
Don Shaver was the first Golden Bear to be drafted, taken in the seventh round in 1981 by the Minnesota Vikings, while Andre Reed was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round in 1985.
Morgan enters the next phase of his football career with plenty of accolades to boast. Most recently, Morgan received the 2016 Gene Upshaw Award, which recognizes the best lineman, offensive or defensive, in all of NCAA Division II college football. He was also named the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Year, the first time a lineman has ever received the honor in conference history.
Morgan has been nationally recognized by a plethora of eyes, including First Team All-America honors by
AP Little,
D2Football.com,
American Football Coaches Association and the
Don Hansen Gazette.
Before playing for Kutztown, Morgan played only one season for Parkway Northwest High School and was not even the starter. Scouts came to several of Parkway Northwest's games to scout the tackle that was ahead of Morgan on the depth chart.
Raymond Monica, who was Kutztown's current coach at the time, took notice of Morgan's size and athleticism and offered him an opportunity to be a walk-on in 2012.
After redshirting the 2012 season, Morgan earned a spot on the line at left tackle, and quite simply, never looked back.
The Philadelphia native only missed one game in his career and started at left tackle in 43 of KU's 44 games in his career, including a career-ending streak of 24 consecutive starts.
During his tenure, he also blocked for two school-record rushing performances.
Further details regarding the beginning of training camp and organized team activities (OTAs) for Morgan will be released upon arrival.
