BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Highlighted by
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) becoming the program's all-time scoring leader, the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team set seven school-records on Wednesday afternoon in KU's narrow 14-12 road loss at Bloomsburg University.
Records aside – the Golden Bears nearly overcame a five-goal deficit in the second half against the Huskies. Bloomsburg led 11-6 early in the second half, but Kutztown answered with four-in-a-row in less than four minutes to draw within one with 21:47 to play.
The teams traded goals down the stretch as KU was never able to tie the game.
Gabriele scored seven goals with seven points to tie the school-record for goals in a game. She is the fourth player in school history to score seven in game and the first since 2010.
The career afternoon pushed Gabriele's career scoring total to 132, breaking Lisa Rawa's previous record of 129. The seven points gave her 169 for her career, breaking the previous school-record of 162 by Margaret Daly.
Both records stood for 28 years.
The scoring output gives Gabriele a career-high 50 goals this season – the second player in program history to score 50 in a season.
On the defensive side, senior
Courtney O'Neill (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) posted a school-record-tying 10 caused turnovers for the third time in her career. Heading into the final game of her career, she stands as the single-season (49) and career (154) school-record-holder in caused turnovers.
O'Neill also set the single-game groundball record with 14 Wednesday.
Sophomore
Emily Smith (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Hubert Catholic) picked up a career-high seven draw controls – tied for sixth-most in a game in school history. It allowed her to break the single-season school-record Wednesday, improving to 60 this season and breaking Gabriele's record of 54 from last season.
Kutztown closes its season on Saturday, April 29, at Seton Hill University. Game-time is set for 1 p.m.
