KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team stormed back in the second half to defeat Gannon University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), 12-10, improving its record to 5-2 overall, 1-2 in the PSAC at Andre Reed Stadium.
Despite being down 7-3 heading into the second half, the Golden Bears started the second half with three unanswered goals to put themselves in position for the comeback.
After Gannon notched a goal to make it 8-6, the Golden Bears went on another run and scored four consecutive goals to find themselves with a 10-8 lead with 14:31 left in the contest.
After trading goals, the score was locked at 11-9 Kutztown with 8:52 to play, but Gannon would not go quietly.
With 6:42 left to play, a free position led to a goal in the top right corner of the net for Gannon, but Kutztown responded soon thereafter with a goal of its own to maintain the 12-10 lead.
Kutztown played keep-away for the final 4:30 of the contest and completed the comeback, 12-10.
Sarah Gabriele (Felton, Pa./York Catholic) and
Lauren Schmidt (Hanover, Pa./South Western) led the offense for the Golden Bears, both notching four goals apiece.
Notably, Gabriele became the sixth Golden Bear to score 100 goals in her career and moved into fifth all-time with 102. She also has 132 points in her career after the six-point performance, which moved her into fifth all-time as well.
Abby Cox (York, Pa./West York) finished the contest with 11 saves and she is now the fifth Golden Bear in history to surpass 200 career saves.
The Golden Bears will remain in PSAC play this week, as they will travel to West Chester University to face the Golden Rams on Wednesday, March 29. The game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
