KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team returns to action this Wednesday, Feb. 8 for another Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Division matchup against Mansfield University, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (8-16, 5-11 PSAC), sixth in the PSAC East, are coming off of an impressive 47-41 defensive win against Lock Haven on Saturday, Feb. 4. The 41 points scored were the fewest KU has allowed in nearly two years, dating back to Feb. 25, 2015.
With the lead changing six times, a layup by
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) in the paint with 5:14 left in the fourth quarter gave the Maroon and Gold the game's final lead change of the night.
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) then helped secure a game-high seven-point lead with a 3-pointer at the 3:57 mark.
LHU reduced the deficit to just three points with 24 seconds left in regulation, but
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) helped KU pull away for the last time, going three-for-four from the free throw line in the last minute of play.
Taylor's performance on Saturday afternoon neared triple-double numbers, as she scored 10 points with eight rebounds, along with a career-high eight assists. Taylor sits at seventh in the PSAC in assists per game (4.2).
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) led the Golden Bears with a game-high 11 points. Her two 3-pointers gives her 51 on the season - 10th place in the program's single-season history and third in the PSAC East.
Lapkiewicz picked up six points and a career-high three blocks on the afternoon, in addition to seven rebounds, one short of a career-best
Wednesday's matchup against Mansfield (5-16, 3-14 PSAC) will be the Golden Bears' second of the 2016-17 season after an on-the-road win on Jan. 14. Trailing by 25 points with 3:42 left in the third, KU won the game 69-68, completing its largest comeback in 18+ years. Taylor's 3-pointer with 45 seconds left turned out to be the game-winner.
The Mounties, fresh off of a 71-51 win against Cheyney University on Saturday, are led by Brielle Kelly (14.3 PPG) and Tianna Jackson (10.9). Mansfield is averaging 56.9 points per game, compared to KU's 67.9.
