KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Following a close defensive victory over Millersville, the Kutztown University women's basketball team is looking to continue its momentum in its next Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest on the road against Bloomsburg on Wednesday, Feb. 22, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Â
The Golden Bears (11-17, 8-12 PSAC) are currently tied with the Huskies (9-15, 8-12 PSAC) for fourth in the PSAC East. KU can clinch a playoff spot with a victory in at least one of its two final contests. A Lock Haven loss in either of its last two games can also clinch a KU playoff berth.
Â
The third and fourth seed of the PSAC Tournament will host a First Round game on Monday, March 1.
Â
The Maroon and Gold held a lead over Millersville for a majority of their matchup on Saturday, Feb. 18. Two free throws from
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic) with two seconds left in the third quarter gave KU a game-high 17-point advantage heading into the fourth, 44-27.
Â
The Marauders quickly responded with a 12-0 run and later reduced Kutztown's lead to just one point with 1:18 left in regulation. KU hit four free throws in the final 49 seconds though, with
Karen Lapkiewicz (Southampton, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) going 2-for-2 with 12 seconds of play to secure the Maroon and Gold win.
Â
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) (11.1 points per game) was the sole double-digit scorer for the Golden Bears, racking up 12 points and a season-high four assists. With her 59th triple of the season, she is now fourth in the PSAC in 3-pointers per game (2.3) and just five shy of the program's all-time record (191).
Â
Taylor picked up three assists, breaking the KU Freshmen single-season record with 118 total. She is currently sixth in the PSAC in assists per game (4.2) and tenth in single-season program history.
Â
Keifonna Ferguson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) picked up seven of the Maroon and Gold's 14 points off the bench with 13 rebounds, one short of her career-high. She is currently 26th in the PSAC in rebounds per game (5.9).
Â
Kutztown fell in its previous matchup against Bloomsburg on Jan. 18, 66-68. Leading by 17 points at the 6:56 mark of the fourth quarter, Bloomsburg capped a 21-2 run with two free throws and tied KU with 1:00 of play remaining, 64-64. A layup from the Huskies with 14 seconds to spare brought about the final score of the evening.Â
Â
Bloomsburg is looking to rebound after an 87-61 loss to second-place East Stroudsburg on Saturday. They are led by Morgan Klunk, who is 20th in the PSAC with a team-leading average of 12.8 points per game.
Â
Following Wednesday's matchup, the Maroon and Gold head to West Chester for their final regular-season contest on Saturday, Feb. 25, beginning at 1 p.m.
