KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University wrestling team won the final three bouts Saturday, two by bonus points, to cap a come-from-behind, 22-17 victory over LIU Post Saturday night in KU's home-opener at Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (1-2) won the first two bouts to jump ahead early.
Austin Petril (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby (Ursinus)) scored 19 points in a 19-2 tech. fall at 125 for a five-point win, and was followed by an 8-3 decision by 133-pounder
Christopher Crane (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) for KU.
The Pioneers soared back with five-straight wins at the middle weights. They won by a major decision, pinfall and three decisions to open up an 18-8 lead after 174 with three bouts to go. Of the setbacks, KU's
Austin Scrivani (Layton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) put forth a valiant effort at 149 against nationally-ranked Joseph Calderone in an 18-12 decision.
The tides turned at 184 for Kutztown. 10th-ranked
Jeff Reimel (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) controlled his match at 184 against Dan McClure, and with the match playing out strongly in Reimel's favor, the official disqualified McClure in the second period due to a bite.
Evan Kauffman (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom (Lehigh)) followed with a 5-0 decision at 197 to tie the match at 17-all. Fifth-ranked heavyweight
Ryan Appleby (Belvidere, N.J./Belvidere) sealed the team win with a 22-6 tech. fall to move to 9-2 on the year and solidify Kutztown's 22-17 victory.
Kutztown returns to action in the New Year, at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Jan. 4-5, 2018.
