KUTZTOWN, Pa. – With 3:08 remaining in overtime,
Rose Moore (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) hammered home a game-winning goal from
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) to lead the Kutztown University field hockey team over the Indiana University (PA) Crimson Hawks, 3-2.
KU got out to a slow start as IUP controlled possession, creating chances in the Golden Bear defensive end for much of the first eight minutes. The Crimson Hawks capitalized on a chance at the 8:34 mark, as Elizabeth Clemmer gathered the rebound and fired a shot into the bottom right corner past a diving
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) to put Indiana (PA) ahead 1-0.
After working its way deep into the offensive end,
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) delivered the equalizer for KU, controlling a deflected shot and striking it into the net to bring the sides level at 1-all. This seemed to build momentum for Kutztown on offense as
Morgan Aldinger (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) found
Mackenzie Fuhrman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) on a penalty corner just before halftime to put the Golden Bears ahead 2-1 at the break.
Twelve minutes into the second half, Kutztown was denied a golden opportunity to extend its lead to two as they were awarded a penalty stroke at the 47:36 mark.
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) was called on by head coach
Marci Scheuing to take the penalty stroke, but a miraculous save from the IUP goalkeeper turned away Donato's attempt.
After a scramble in the goal crease which included a defensive save from Aldinger, the Crimson Hawks were given a penalty stroke of their own at the 51:44 mark. Madelyn Mullen calmly stepped to the spot and delivered to tie the match at 2-2.
This back-and-forth affair would need extra time to decide the victor as both teams traded chances, but couldn't convert in the final 20 minutes of regulation.
With just seven players aside in OT, the field opened considerably featuring a flurry of shots and penalty corners for both teams at the overtime period ticked away. At the 81:50 mark, Wozniak sent a shot which was parried away by the keeper, but Moore was right there for the rebound, finishing this exciting match in style with the overtime winner for KU.
After suffering a few crushing defeats in their most recent matches, Moore's first career goal came at the perfect time for the Golden Bears, who move to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with the 3-2 victory.
Goalkeeper
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) improves her record to 7-5 on the 2017 season while IUP net-minder Alyssa Lerda falls to 5-6. The Crimson Hawks drop to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC.
Kutztown will hit the road for its next match, facing the No. 5 West Chester University Rams on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
