KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team hits the road for its next Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) matchup against league-leading Shippensburg University on Wednesday, Feb. 1, beginning at 6 p.m.
KU (4-10 PSAC, 7-15), currently tied for the final postseason berth at sixth place in the PSAC East standings, looks to begin a winning streak after edging rival West Chester 72-70 on Wednesday, Jan. 25 thanks to
Sierra Taylor (Williamstown, N.J./Camden Catholic)'s game-winning jumper with nine seconds to go. Taylor registered game-highs of 15 points and six assists, which moved her into seventh in the PSAC in assists per game (4.1).
Game starters earned the most points for the Maroon and Gold in the matchup.
Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) (13.6 PPG),
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) (12.4) and Taylor (12.3), earned 41 of Kutztown's total points against West Chester.
Taylor Thames (Colmar, Pa./North Penn) and
Gabbi Wright (Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) each scored 10 points off the bench.
Notably,
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) made her 174th career 3-pointer, second-highest in program history, to bring her average to 2.4 per game, sixth in the PSAC.
Watson is eighth in the PSAC in rebounds per game (8.1) and 22nd in scoring average, while Heck's and Taylor's scoring average place them at 16th and 24th in the conference, respectively. Taylor and Heck are also tied with a .805 free throw percentage, good for seventh and eighth in the PSAC, respectively.
The Golden Bears will face Shippensburg for the second time in the 2016-17 season, after losing the first meeting on Dec. 30, 70-60. Tied entering the fourth quarter, KU unfortunately dropped the matchup after the Raiders went 4-for-5 from 3-point range in the fourth quarter.
Shippensburg (11-4, 16-5), first in the PSAC East and fresh off its 11th straight win against Millersville on Jan. 28, is led by Stephanie Knauer (14.1 PPG) and Colleen Young (12.0). The Raiders are averaging 70.2 points per game, comparable to the Maroon and Gold's 69.5.
KU returns home for its following game this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. against Lock Haven at Keystone Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to recognize the Play4Kay initiative, which has donated over $5 million to women's cancer research. Pink t-shirts will also be given away.
