KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Just looking at fans in the stands, you could tell it was a hot night in Keystone Arena. Fresh off playing 20 sets in less than 24 hours, the Kutztown University women's volleyball team won the first set of its home-opener Wednesday night, but Holy Family prevailed with three ensuing victories to down the Golden Bears 3-1 in a steamy Keystone Arena.
Holy Family finished with 20 more kills and 30 more attacks that Kutztown, and used 14 more digs defensively to keep the ball alive and turn it into points the other way.
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)), the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Southeast Athlete of the Week, was not expected to match her historic 27-kill performance on Saturday. Once she hit her stride late, she added five kills in the final set to finish with a team-high 13 on 51 attacks. A two-way player, Moyer also added 17 digs.
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) added seven kills on an effective .350 hitting. Fellow senior
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) set up her Golden Bear hitters with 34 assists and four kills on six attacks.
Defensively,
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) picked up a match-high 22 digs.
The Golden Bears (1-4) opened with a 25-22 first-set win. The entire set was played within three points, leading to a 22-22 tie. Freshmen duo
Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and
Cara Long (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) came through with consecutive kills for set-point, as a bad Holy Family set gave KU the win.
Holy Family (2-4) made late runs in each of the ensuing three sets to win 25-19, 25-18 and 25-17.
Holy Family outside hitter Chase Wassel will certainly need to ice her arm after Wednesday night. She capped her night with 25 kills on 75 swings while also adding a team-high 22 digs. Gianna Pesognelli (14) and Jaime Bonner (10) each added double-digit kills as well.
Kacie Brien added 47 assists and 11 digs.
Kutztown returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10, with a road match at the University of the Sciences beginning at 1 p.m.
