PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team picked up its first three-set victory of the year on Saturday afternoon, sweeping the University of the Sciences in non-conference action at Bobby Morgan Arena.
In its first three-setter of the young season, Kutztown (2-4) won each set by at least seven points as the Golden Bears did not trail by more than two at any point of the match. KU hit .209 on the afternoon and held the University of the Sciences (0-2) to a .000 hitting percentage.
With 12 kills on .344 hitting,
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) continued her strong play to open the season. She also led the match with 12 digs for her fifth double-double in six matches to open the campaign.
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) added eight digs each, while
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) was the second on the team with five kills.
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) led all players with 24 assists and
Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) was involved in a team-best five blocks.
Kutztown controlled play from the start, scoring the first four points to go up 4-0 on a Moyer kill. The Golden Bears would lead by at least three throughout the remainder of the set and would pull away with six straight points, the final five of which were University of the Sciences errors, to take a 14-5 lead.
The second set was much closer early with the Sciences leading 6-4 at one point and holding an advantage as late as 10-9. KU turned it on from there though, tallying seven of the next nine points, all coming on Devil errors. Back-to-back kills from Moyer moments later then capped a 10-4 run to put the Golden Bears ahead 19-14.
Also deadlocked early in the third, Kutztown finally pulled away with yet another 7-2 stretch. Leading 10-9, once again it was the Golden Bears taking advantage of Sciences errors as they accounted for all seven of KU's points in the flurry.
Kutztown returns to Keystone Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 13, to host Wilmington at 7 p.m.
