KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) became the fourth player in program history to surpass 1,500 career digs on Friday night as the Kutztown University women's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-27, 15-25, 13-25) to Seton Hill in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at Keystone Arena.
With a match-high 17 digs, Brake joined Nicole Biuso (2004-07), Jamie Celia (2007-10) and
Lindsey Smith (2008-11) in accomplishing the feat. Now with 1,510 for her career, she is just 43 away from moving into second place all-time.
Friday's match began with a thrilling first set in which Kutztown (3-11, 0-3 PSAC) actually had two set points, thanks in part to .294 hitting. Trailing 22-23, a
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) kill and Seton Hill (11-4, 3-0) attack error gave KU its first opportunity to take the set. SHU responded with the next point, but this time it was a
Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) kill giving the Golden Bears set point number two. From there, the Griffins took the final three points with kills by Leah Bisignani and Jillian Livorse and a bad set by KU.
Kutztown erased an early four-point deficit in the second to come all the way back to go on top, 11-10, when an
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) service ace capped a 6-1 run. Seton Hill answered right back with a run of their own, taking 10 of the next 11 points to run away with the set.
KU did not let that phase it early on in the third as the Golden Bears jumped out to an 8-5 advantage on three consecutive Seton Hill errors. The Griffins regrouped though, using a 10-3 surge to eventually complete the sweep.
Moyer was one kill shy of both her 12th double-double and 12th match with double-digit kills as she led Kutztown in kills and added 12 digs.
Howe was one kill behind Moyer with eight, while
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) had six kills and a match-high three blocks.
Conti led the team with 29 assists.
Seton Hill featured a balanced offensive attack that saw four individuals finish with at least nine kills, led by Cassie Hausfeld's 12. Katie Wenson added 10 on .450 hitting as the Griffins hit .270 as a team and held KU to a .136 hitting percentage.
Taylor Sabol had a match-high 39 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double.
KU concludes its tough stretch against the PSAC's Southwest Division tomorrow, hosting California (Pa.) (11-3, 3-0) at 1 p.m. in Keystone Arena as part of Family Day.
