PREVIEW: Women's Soccer Looks to Extend Winning Streak this Weekend at Keystone Field

Friday Live Stats | Saturday Live Stats

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team will look to keep its momentum going this weekend as it hosts two Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) games at Keystone Field. It hosts Indiana (Pa.) on Friday, Sept. 30, at 1 p.m. and faces off against California (Pa.) on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m.

Kutztown (6-2, 4-2 PSAC) has won three straight games and six of its last seven after a season-opening loss at Millersville. The Golden Bears are also undefeated at Keystone Field this season with a 3-0 mark.

KU is tied for sixth in the PSAC with 12 total points, while Indiana (Pa.) is fourth (6-3, 5-2) and California (Pa.) is 14th (1-5-2, 1-5-2).

Indiana (Pa.) has won three of its last four contests, including a 3-0 decision over Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Sept. 24. KU has had the upper edge over the Crimson Hawks lately with a 3-0-1 mark against them since 2012.

The Golden Bears will have to focus on stopping Indiana (Pa.) junior Lexie Palluconi on Friday afternoon. She leads the PSAC with eight goals and 17 total points. Palluconi has scored in six contests, including a hat-trick against Mansfield on Sept. 10.

California (Pa.) is on a four-game losing streak and has not won a game since Sept. 3. The Vulcans have struggled mightily on offense, scoring just three goals in eight contests. California (Pa.) has lost two of its last three matchups with the Golden Bears. Its lone win was on penalty kicks in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Atlantic Regionals.

As a team, KU is fourth in the PSAC with 2.00 goals per game, while Indiana (Pa.) is sixth with 1.67 and California (Pa.) is 16th at .375. The Crimson Hawks and Golden Bears are allowing less than a goal per game, while the Vulcans are allowing 1.05 per contest.

Freshman Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) is off to a strong start for KU, scoring four goals (third in PSAC) and posting two assists (fifth) in eight contests. She leads the Golden Bears in goals, assists, points (10) and shots (22).

Mohr was the catalyst behind KU's 4-1 victory over Holy Family on Monday, Sept. 26, as she scored a team-high two goals and recorded an assist.

Senior Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) is tied for second on the team with three goals (sixth) and leads the Golden Bears with 16 shots-on-goal. She recorded a goal in KU's win over Holy Family, the 22nd of her career, moving her into sixth place all-time in program history.

Freshmen Madison McLelland (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) and Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) have all contributed for Kutztown during the early part of the season. McLelland has posted three goals (sixth), including a game-winner, while Zwiercan has posted two goals and two assists (tied for team lead). Griffith has a goal and an assist to go with 12 total shot attempts.

Goalkeepers Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) have both earned playing time this season, starting in four games each. Both goalies have similar statistics, posting identical 3-1 records in goal, while only allowing four goals each.

Taylor leads the team with a 0.86 goals-against-average (seventh), while Bracken has the edge with 20 saves (seventh) and a .833 save percentage (seventh).

Head coach Erik Burstein heads into the weekend with 146 career wins, just four shy of 150 for his career. He has an impressive 123-55-13 record at KU in 9+ seasons and posted a 23-29-2 mark while at Rutgers-Newark from 2003-05.

Following its two games this weekend, KU heads to East Stroudsburg for a PSAC matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
