KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University field hockey team displayed its offensive firepower on Saturday afternoon, posting 31 total shots in an impressive 3-1 victory over Slippery Rock University at Andre Reed Stadium.
The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 with the win on Saturday, their first 3-0 start since the 2013 season.
The KU offense controlled possession for a majority of the contest, recording 31 shots to just five for Slippery Rock. The Golden Bears also had a decisive 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) gave KU the lead with the first goal of the game at the 15:48 mark in the first half.
Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) created the goal opportunity with a powerful shot that was saved by Slippery Rock goalie Nicole Bream. Tiwold capitalized with a goal, knocking it in off the rebound.
The Golden Bears had a few more opportunities to score towards the end of the first half, but Slippery Rock held them at bay. KU went into the half with a 1-0 advantage.
Megan McKay of Slippery Rock scored the equalizer just a minute into the second half, going coast-to-coast for an impressive goal.
KU managed to limit the damage and persevered with a go-ahead goal by freshman
Kyra Wozniak (Plains, Pa./James M. Coughlin) with just under 17 minutes remaining in the half. Wozniak converted on a great dish from Stewart, deflecting the ball into the cage for the lead.
Wozniak proved to be the difference-maker in the game for the Golden Bears, scoring her second goal in a row with just five minutes to go in the contest.
Micaela Beaty (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) crossed the ball into the circle, giving Wozniak a great chance to score. She converted to give KU a commanding 3-1 lead and put the game out of reach.
Stewart and
Madison Wampler (York, Pa./West York Area) each posted a game-high eight shot attempts in the victory. Tiwold had four shots-on-goal, while Wozniak converted on two of her four shot attempts.

Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) recorded the win in goal, posting three saves on the afternoon.
KU heads out to Mercyhurst University for a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. The Golden Bears will look for their first 4-0 start since the 2011 season when they started off 5-0.
