BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team dropped a late-season Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader, falling 9-2 and 11-5 to Bloomsburg University Sunday afternoon at Litwhiler Field.
With the setback, Kutztown (19-27, 9-15) now finds itself in sixth place in the PSAC East, a game behind both Bloomsburg and Shippensburg for the final playoff spot. The Golden Bears would have to finish a game up on both teams, as BU and SU hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
KU has just four PSAC games remaining in the regular season. It dropped the season-series with the Huskies, three games to one.
Bloomsburg started the scoring in game one, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Kutztown responded in the top of the third, tying the game off a
Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)) sacrifice fly that scored
Anthony Sneska (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) to make it 1-1.
BU answered with four runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. The Golden Bears added a run in the top of the sixth before getting retired as the Huskies pulled away with the 9-2 victory.
Game two started out much of the same way.
This time Kutztown jumped ahead in the top of the first, getting a McNab single to left center to score
Eric Lane (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and take a 1-0 lead. It didn't take long for the Bloomsburg offense to respond, as the Huskies answered with four runs in the bottom of the second to make it 4-1.
KU kept scrapping away and cut the lead to 4-2 with an
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) sacrifice fly in the top of the third. BU added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead back to 6-2. The Golden Bears weren't done yet, and scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game.
Eventually the KU effort ran out of steam, as the comeback took too much out of it. Bloomsburg scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 11-5. The heart of KU's order was retired in order in the top of the seventh to give the Huskies the win.
With his career coming to a close, McNab, a senior, led the Golden Bears on offense, finishing the day 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Ben Eppley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Frederick C.C.)) hit 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in a game two start.
Ryan Kirman paced the BU offense, going 4-for-8 with two RBIs and a run scored. Bloomsburg used a balanced scoring-attack, one that saw it finish with nine players driving in at least one run.
The Golden Bears return to the diamond to finish up conference play with a season-series against No. 1 Millersville University (39-4, 21-3 PSAC) on April 29-30. KU hosts Millersville in a doubleheader at North Campus Field on Friday, April 29 at 1 p.m. The two teams then travel to MU to finish with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30. First pitch on Saturday is also 1 p.m.
