KU Series StatsKUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team split its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against West Chester University Saturday, taking the opening game 2-1 before dropping game two, 7-1 at North Campus Field. The Golden Bears and Golden Rams split the season-series 2-2, with each team picking up a victory in a doubleheader at West Chester, Thursday.
Kutztown (14-17, 5-7 PSAC) opened the afternoon with a win, powered by 4.2 scoreless-innings in relief from
Anthony DeVito (Philadelphia, Pa./Central (Mercer County C.C.)).
West Chester (16-9, 6-6 PSAC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an RBI-single by Shane Dressler. KU starter
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was hit with a hard comebacker that forced him from the game in the top of the third.
Kutztown responded in the bottom half of the inning with a passed-ball run by
Mike White (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) to tie it up at one. KU broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth off a sacrifice fly by
Mike Milazzo (Titusville, N.J./Notre Dame) that scored
Eric Lane (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to make it 2-1. DeVito allowed just one hit with four strikeouts over the final two innings to close out the Kutztown victory.
West Chester started off game two fast as well, getting another RBI-single by Dressler in the top of the first to make it 1-0. The Golden Rams then added two runs in the second, third and fifth to make it a 7-0 lead. Lane singled to left field to drive in a KU-run in the bottom of the fifth, but it would be the only offense it could produce in the game to give WCU a 7-1 victory.
Lane finished the series batting .667 with six hits, three home runs, eight RBIs and five runs scored. He again led KU on offense on the afternoon, going 3-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Milazzo was second on KU for the series in RBIs (5), and added two home runs. White went 3-for-8 with three runs scored.
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)),
Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)) and
Joe Santospago (Doylestown, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Mercer County C.C.)) each added two RBIs.
Dressler led the Golden Rams on offense, finishing the day 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Kutztown High School graduate Andrew Gernet threw six innings in his game two victory, allowing four hits with one earned run and six strikeouts. Bill Ford went 2-for-4 in game two, with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored.
The Golden Bears return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 6 to host Wilmington University in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
