KU-ESU Series Stats | Photo GalleryEAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team split its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against No. 11 East Stroudsburg University after winning game one 8-1 and falling in a close 6-5 game two Saturday at Mitterling Field. The two teams split in a doubleheader at KU earlier in the week, splitting its season series 2-2.
Starter
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) threw a complete-game in game one, allowing just three hits and one earned run with eight strikeouts to pick up his third victory on the season.
Kutztown (12-15, 3-5 PSAC) started off the opener fast, getting a two-RBI single by
Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) in the top of the first to make it 2-0. ESU responded with a solo home run in the third to cut the KU lead in half. The Golden Bears broke the game open in the top of the fourth, getting an RBI-single by Darian Sarlat. Sarlat came around to score later in the inning when
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) forced a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1.
Mike Milazzo (Titusville, N.J./Notre Dame) hit a solo-shot in the fifth to make it 5-1. O'Dell added an RBI-single in the top of the sixth and followed it with a two-RBI double in the seventh to give KU its 8-1 victory.
KU and ESU went back and forth in game two. Kutztown got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, off RBIs from O'Dell and Milazzo. ESU responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own to tie it at 2. The Warriors added another run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-2.
Kutztown regained its lead with a three-run six inning.
Brady McNab (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Frederick C.C.)) hit an RBI double, followed by a two-RBI double by
Kyle Rogers (Hazleton, Pa./Hazleton Area) to make it 5-3. ESU answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, and held on to win 6-5.
The Golden Bears were led on offense by O'Dell, who finished the day 4-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) went 3-for-6 with three runs scored. Milazzo finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Sarlat went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Robert Bennie led the way on offense for East Stroudsburg (22-4, 6-2 PSAC), going a combined 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
KU returns to the diamond with a road, non-conference doubleheader against the University of the Sciences on Monday, March 28. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
