KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Kutztown University's softball team made it nine wins in a row in taking a doubleheader from Goldey-Beacom University by scores of 8-0 and 6-1, Thursday at North Campus Field.
Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford),
Jacqueline Walsh (Downingtown, Pa./Coatesville),
Danielle Amato (Henderson, Nev./Coronado), and
Marissa Linquist (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford) all homered on the afternoon, as the Golden Bears exploded for 14 total runs off of 19 hits in 12 innings of play.
Kutztown won game one 8-0 after five innings. The Golden Bears scored seven runs over the first three innings, and cruised to the victory.
Amato got the scoring started, singling through the right side to score
Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) to put KU up 1-0 after one. Keeny then hit a two-RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the second to push the lead to 3-0. Keeny came around to score later in the inning to make it 4-0.
Kutztown socked two homeruns in the bottom of the third. Newman got it started with a solo-shot to center which was followed two batters later by a two-run homer off the bat of Walsh to make the lead 7-0.
Linquist scored again in the bottom of the six, which turned into KU final run in the 8-0 victory.
Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) threw a complete-game shutout, allowing two hits with four strikeouts to pick up her seventh victory of the season.
Kutztown started off game two right where it left off, scoring two runs in the bottom half of both the second and fourth inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Amato doubled to right center to in the second to put KU on the board. She later came around to score on an RBI-single by
Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) to make it 2-0. Amato hit a solo-shot to centerfield in the fourth, and Linquist again came around to score later in the inning to make the lead four.
Goldey-Beacom got its first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. The Golden Bears responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning off a homerun by Linquist and an RBI-single by
Blayse Cholish (Peckville, Pa./Valley View).
Newman started the game with four scoreless-innings, allowing three hits and striking out two.
Jackie Morell (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) finished it, going the final three innings and allowing one earned run with one strikeout.
Keeny lead the Golden Bears on offense, finishing the day 3-for-6 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Amato also went 3-for-6, adding three RBIs and two runs scored. Linquist batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. 10 different KU players collected at least one hit.
The Golden Bears get over a week off before returning to the diamond to host Shippensburg University in their first PSAC conference doubleheader of the season, Friday, March 25. Game one is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
