Baseball Splits First Conference Doubleheader of the Season

WILSON, N.C. - The Kutztown University baseball team split its opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader against Lock Haven University Friday, taking the first game 5-4 and dropping the second 6-2 at Fleming Stadium.

In the opener, Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) threw a complete-game with 12 strikeouts to pick up his second win of the season.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning off a Mike White (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown) RBI-single. Lock Haven answered in the bottom of the fourth, with a RBI-double to tie it up at one. KU answered back in the top of the sixth with a Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) two-run homer over the left-field wall to retake a 3-1 lead. The Golden Bears added two more runs in the top of the seventh, off of a two-RBI single to right center by Eric Lane (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to go ahead 5-1.

Lock Haven threatened in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, but Swarmer (2-2) stopped the rally and slammed the door with the tying run on third to seal the victory.

In the second game, the Bald Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Kutztown responded with two runs of its own in the top of the third, with Lane scoring on a wild pitch and Zach Schram (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North (Mercer County C.C.)) following it up with an RBI-single to cut the deficit to 3-2. Lock Haven answered with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, and held on over the final four frames to get the 6-2 win.

Lane led the Golden Bears on offense, finishing the day a combined 4-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Schram went 1-for-2 in the second game with an RBI. Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) added two runs scored and a stolen base on the afternoon. It was Rottet's first homer of the season.

Kutztown is now 10-9 (1-1 PSAC) on the season and 7-3 on its current spring break trip.

Mike Anthony threw a complete-game for Lock Haven (5-6, 1-1 PSAC) in game two. Hunter Szafarski led the Bald Eagles on offense, finishing the day 4-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Kutztown returns to the diamond with another conference doubleheader against Lock Haven starting at 12 p.m. Saturday at Fleming Stadium.
