MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill scored game-winning runs in the sixth inning of both its games against the Kutztown University baseball team on Saturday as KU fell 3-0 and 6-3 in its season-opener at Mars Hill's Henderson Field.
Pitcher
Matt Swarmer (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) held a no-hitter through five innings of the opener, but battled in the sixth and was eventually pulled. Swarmer struck out nine batters through five, but allowed his first two singles of the game to open the sixth and give way to the bullpen.
Mars Hill's Dylan Powers doubled the next at-bat to take a 2-0 lead and scored later in the inning on a bunt single. Reliever
Matt Matricardi (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) came in late and induced an inning-ending double-play, but there was no comeback for Kutztown.
Catcher
Derian Sarlat (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) went 2-for-2 at the plate and accounted to two of KU's three hits. Mars Hill had four hits in game one.
The home team took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Kutztown gained its first lead of the day with a leadoff home run by
Alec O'Dell (Edgewood, Md./West Chester Bayard Rustin (Harford C.C.)) in the fourth, a game-tying RBI single by
Bo Rottet (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) later in the fourth, and a go-ahead and leadoff home run by
Ben Eppley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley (Frederick C.C.)) in the fifth.
Paul Piromalli (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West (Mercer County C.C.)) started game two and allowed one run in three innings, and was relieved by
David Brown (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) in the fourth, who also let up one run as KU held a 3-2 in the sixth.
The bullpen did not fare as well in the sixth. Off a new pitcher and three total in the inning, Mars Hill opened the sixth with four straight hits, three of which went for extra bases to give it a 5-3 lead before KU recorded an out. One more run was scored for a 6-3 lead for Mars Hill.
Four Golden Bears had multi-hit games for KU's eight hits of the game. Home-run hitters Eppley and O'Dell each had two, as did
Jeff Zebrowski (Chester Springs, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and Rottet.
Kutztown plays another doubleheader against Mars Hill on Sunday, Feb. 7 beginning at 12 p.m.
