Softball Wins Pair of Five-Inning Games on Sunday

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Sara Keeny (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) went 7-for-8 with seven runs scored and four stolen bases as the leadoff hitter for the Kutztown University softball team on Sunday. KU posted two five-inning victories on the final day of Tusculum College's Pioneer Classic, 9-1 over Ursuline and 8-0 over Shepherd.

The Golden Bears (4-4) had dropped their first three games of the tournament by a combined four runs, by left Tenn. on a high note with a 17-1 scoring advantage on Sunday.

In the opener against Ursuline, KU's top five hitters went 16-for-19 with eight runs scored, eight RBI and seven stolen bases.

Keeny, a freshman, went 4-for-4 with four runs scored and four stolen bases in the opener. Not only is she Kutztown's first player with multiple stolen bases in a game since 2013, but her four swipes are the most for a Golden Bear in the last 15 seasons. The last time a KU player scored four runs in a game was in 2011.

Sophomore Nicki Mann (Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) matched Keeny's 4-for-4 performance against Ursuline. She scored three runs and stole three bases.

Danielle Sienko (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter) was the top run producer with four RBIs. She went 3-for-4 with two doubles, including a two-run double in the first inning. Danielle Amato (Henderson, Nev./Coronado) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs while also pitching a complete game. Gabby Tareila (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) went 2-for-3 to highlight the top five hitters in the lineup.

Amato picked up the complete-game win with three strikeouts.

Kenny followed with a 3-for-4 nightcap against Shepherd. She scored three runs including the first run of the game in the first inning off a Sienko double.

Nine players recorded a hit for KU in the game, while Tareila and Rachel Lawes (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted two hits apiece. Lawes and Bridget Newman (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford) each had two RBIs.

Savannah Nierintz (Clifton Heights, Pa./Upper Darby) threw her first shutout of the year. She allowed five hits and notched two strikeouts.

Kutztown looks to carry Sunday's momentum into spring break, beginning next weekend. KU travels to Clermont, Flor. and Salem, Va. for 13 games beginning on Saturday, March 5.
