Live StatsKUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team is down, but not out as it looks to keep its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoff chances alive with a win against Mansfield University on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m.
The Golden Bears (9-15, 6-14 PSAC) find themselves seventh in the standings, trailing Lock Haven by two games for the sixth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Division. Kutztown has games against Mansfield on Saturday and a home matchup to end the year against West Chester on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m. Lock Haven (11-14, 8-13) has just one game left against East Stroudsburg this Saturday.
If Kutztown wins out, and Lock Haven drops its last game of the season, the Golden Bears will win the tie-breaker between the two teams and be postseason-bound for the seventh time in eight seasons.
The Golden Bears are coming off a tough 78-62 road-loss to Cheyney on Tuesday.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) contributed another great all-around game in the defeat (15 points, six assists and seven rebounds).
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and
Gina Lewis (Atlantic City, N.J./Holy Spirit) both chipped in 12 points.
Mansfield (6-17, 3-16) is coming off of a loss as well, dropping an 89-57 decision to East Stroudsburg on Wednesday evening.
Kutztown enters the game averaging 69.5 points per game, good for seventh-best in the PSAC. Mansfield sits at 14th, averaging 63.2. Both teams are very similar in field goal shooting and defense.
The Golden Bears have been led all season by Watson, Lee and
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area). Watson is the fourth-leading scoring in the league (16.6 points) and seventh-best rebounder (nine per game). Lee averages 14.8 points, along with a team-high 5.2 assists per game. Altomare rounds out the scoring from behind the arc, leading the PSAC in 3-pointers made this season with 74. She is also closing in on Kutztown's school-record for 3-pointers made in a single-season (81). Altomare averages 13.6 points.
Watson leads the way on defense for Kutztown with 36 blocks on the season.
Mansfield is led on offense by Katie Fitzpatrick (15.7 points per game), and Brielle Kelly (12.7). Fitzpatrick also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and two steals per game.
The Golden Bears have won their past seven meetings against Mansfield.
