CHEYNEY, Pa. –
Ryan Connolly (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) dropped 27 points, shot 7-for-7 from the field and made all six of his 3-pointers to lead the Kutztown University men's basketball team to a 90-84 road win at Cheyney University's Cope Hall Tuesday night.
The Golden Bears (19-5, 16-4) are a win-away from their fourth 20-win season in program history and first since 2010. They are a half-game ahead of West Chester for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division. KU has a bye while West Chester hosts Cheyney on Wednesday.
The teams are expected to play for the PSAC East title at Keystone Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
Including his 3-for-3 game from long range against East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Connolly has made his last nine 3-pointers. Connolly made 7-of-8 free throws Tuesday, and over his last four games, has made 20-of-24 free throws.
Kutztown led the entire game and by as many as 18 early in the second half. It continued to hold on late with a 10-point lead with 3:56 to play and an eight-point lead with 1:24 to go, but the Wolves did not give up.
Cheyney made a layup, KU missed two free throws the following possession, and Cheyney pocketed a 3-pointer in transition to cut its deficit to three, 87-84, with 24 seconds to play. KU got the ball to Connolly, its best free throw shooter, who made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 17 seconds to ensure the KU victory.
Big-man
Anthony Selby (Jersey City, N.J./Williamstown (Burlington County CC)) scored a career-high-tying 19 points that included a 9-for-10 performance at the free throw line. He also scored 19 in last year's game vs. Cheyney. Selby was second on the team with five rebounds Tuesday night.
Kutztown's leading rebounder was
Josh Johnson (Norristown, Pa./Norristown), who was one shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. He made 7-of-11 shots as KU shot 56.6 percent from the field. He also dished out four assists.
Will Adams (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep (McMurry)) rounded out Kutztown's four double-digit scorers with 10 points and three rebounds off the bench.
Point guards
Austin Beidelman (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and
Ethan Ridgeway (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) combined for 11 assists and three turnovers.
For Cheyney, Juwan Mullen scored 22 points on 9-for-16 shooting with a team-high seven rebounds. Rafiq Marshall scored 16 points, Eugene Lett added 15 and Imir Bailey finished with 13.
Kutztown travels to Mansfield University for its final regular-season road game on Saturday, Feb. 20. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
