KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team opens both its home schedule and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play this weekend in Keystone Arena when it hosts No. 8 California on Saturday, Nov. 19 and Slippery Rock on Sunday, Nov. 20. Both games are scheduled to tip at 1 p.m. as part of doubleheaders with the men. KU has won three consecutive home-openers as well as three straight PSAC-openers dating back to the 2013-14 season.

Kutztown is coming off a weekend in which it went 1-1 at the Conference Challenge hosted by West Virginia State. The Golden Bears opened the season with a 75-63 victory over Charleston (WV) before falling to the host by a score of 93-123.

KU used a game-opening 13-0 to lead throughout in the victory over Charleston. In her first career game as a Golden Bear, Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood (Philadelphia U.)) poured in not only a game-high but also a career-high 25 points in just 27 minutes.

Heck then provided her second straight 25-point game and first double-double of the season against West Virginia State. She scored 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two blocks.

As a result of the two performances, Heck was named the first PSAC Eastern Division Athlete of the Week of 2016-17 on Monday as she became the first Golden Bear to record back-to-back games of 25+ points since KU Hall of Famer Amy Wahl did so on Dec. 18 and Dec. 20 of 1998. She currently leads the PSAC in points per game (25.5), is fifth in FG Percentage (65.5) and is 11th in rebounds per game (8.5).

Senior Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) is 15 points shy of becoming the 16th Golden Bear in program history to score 1,000 career points. She currently is second on team, averaging 12.0 points per game, and is atop the squad and ranks sixth in the PSAC in rebounds per game (10.0).

Those two lead a KU offense ranks third in the PSAC in field goal percentage (46.9) and points per game (84.0) through the first week of play. The Maroon and Gold are leading the league with 21.5 assists per game, with four Golden Bears ranking in the top-15 of the conference in assists per game.  Senior Kara Funk (Dover, Pa./Dover) leads the team and is third in the league with an average of 6.0 assists per game, while redshirt-sophomore Kalee Fuegel (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) is just behind her in fifth with an average of 5.5 assists per game.

The two-time defending PSAC champion and 2015 national champion, No. 8 California (3-0) has begun the season with three consecutive 15+ point wins.
