KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshmen
Ashley Engler (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) and
Kaylee Kupiec (Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) each scored their first career collegiate goals, and fellow freshman
Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) added a score and assist as the 22nd-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team recorded its third shutout in four matches, defeating Clarion 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.
Engler put No. 22 Kutztown (9-3, 7-3 PSAC) ahead just 1:25 into the contest. Senior
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) drove past the defense to the right end line and sent in her cross to the center of the box where Engler was waiting to tap it in.
For Curry, the assist was the 51st career point of her career as she moved into ninth place all-time in program history.
KU had several opportunities to double its lead throughout the remainder of the half, putting seven more shots attempts on frame, including three in the span of 29 seconds in the 27th and 28th minute. Two of those chances were by
Felicia Silveira (Hampton, N.J./Voorhees), who saw her one-timer from an
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) pass denied by a defender right in front of net before goalie Krista Mosi dove on the line to stop her successive shot on the rebound just seconds later.
On the ensuing corner kick,
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) controlled the ball in the box and unleashed another shot that worked Mosi. Minutes later on another corner,
Morgan Staley (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) forced yet another team save as her header was cleared on the line.
Clarion's (2-10-2) third team save in the first 49 minutes came just 3:51 out of the half when
Katie Jaxheimer (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff)'s header from
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township)'s corner was once more blocked by a defender.
Kutztown's next shot on frame in the 64th minute finally produced goal number two. Mohr slipped a ball through the back line to a streaking Griffith, who had just subbed on less than three minutes earlier, and the rookie coolly took one dribble before slotting the ball into the lower left corner for her second goal of the year. Mohr's assist was her team-leading third this season.
Twelve and a half minutes later it was Griffith setting up Kupiec to all but seal the victory with just 14:03 remaining. In a brilliant individual effort, Griffith dribbled around multiple defenders on the right side and sent a cross to the center of the box, where her fellow classmate beautifully one-timed it past second-half sub Brigid Stermel for an emphatic ending to the KU performance.
In the final minutes, freshman
Madison Mummert (Glen Rock, Pa./Susquehannock) nearly tallied her first career score as well but was rejected on a beautiful save by Stermel.
Kutztown dominated play, totaling 11 shots in each half en route to outshooting Clarion 22-2 on the afternoon. The Golden Bears took 10 corners and limited the Golden Eagles to just three.
Freshman
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) was forced to make just one save in net, on a free kick in the 81st minute, as she recorded her second shutout of the season.
Cassie Schmidt (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall),
Morgan Staley (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett),
Dana Wong (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and
Shea Conway (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) started as the back-four in front of her, with
Olivia Novak (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central (Temple)),
Kate Martin (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and Monte Carlo also providing minutes on defense in the second half as part of the shutout.
KU is back on the road on Tuesday, Oct. 11, traveling to Bloomsburg for a 7 p.m. first whistle under the lights.
