BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The No. 23 Kutztown University women's soccer team shutout its second opponent in a row on Tuesday night, holding on for a 1-0 decision over the Bloomsburg University Huskies in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match inside of Steph Pettit Stadium.
Freshman
Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep) scored her second goal in as many games in the 37th minute of the contest. The score came from the left wing from fellow freshman
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico), whose pass reached the center of the box and allowed Griffith to get a clean shot into the back of the net.
The first half was closely contested as Bloomsburg held a slight advantage in shots, 7-6, and while KU was able to find the back of the net with one of their attempts, possession was clearly back and forth throughout the opening 45 minutes.
Kutztown kept up the pressure after the break with a high volume of shots and possession inside of Husky territory, getting off nine shot attempts to Bloomsburg's two in the period.
Although KU was not able to add insurance, freshman
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) made two saves to record her second straight shutout and third of the season. The blanking was the Golden Bears' sixth shutout of the season, as the defense has proven to be a staple for the team.
With the victory, Kutztown now moves to 10-3 overall and 8-3 in the PSAC. The conference record puts the Golden Bears just a single point out of fourth place behind Slippery Rock.
Kutztown will look for some separation in the conference standings this Saturday, Oct. 15 against Gannon University on Senior Day. Prior to the 1 p.m. start, KU will honor seniors
Cassie Schmidt (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall),
Katie Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Katie Jaxheimer (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area).
