KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The No. 14 Kutztown University women's soccer team will host its third Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal in the previous four years tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 1. The second-seeded Golden Bears welcome seventh-seeded Bloomsburg to Keystone Field for a 1 p.m. first whistle. KU defeated the Huskies 1-0 on Oct. 11 behind
Cara Griffith (Dickson City, Pa./Scranton Prep)'s 37th-minute goal.
Tickets for Tuesday's Quarterfinal match are $10 for adults and $5 for students. All PSAC students will be admitted into the game for free with a valid school ID. Pets will not be allowed at Keystone Field and will need to be kept off the premises.
Tuesday's match will be telecast on KUTV by the University's electronic media department. Fans can watch the game on Service Electric Cablevision Channel 24 and 524 (HD), Hometown Utilicom Channel 191 in Kutztown and eastern Berks Country, and Service Electric Channel 266 in the Lehigh Valley. All games are also available through KUTV's webcast.
Having already set the program-records for regular season victories and PSAC wins, Kutztown (15-3, 13-3 PSAC) looks to add one more record to its historic season tomorrow. A victory would tie the program-record for victories in a season, matching the 2011 team's 16 wins.
Since the PSAC merged from two divisions into one in 2010, Kutztown is seeded second for just the second time, with the other occurrence coming in 2011 when the Maroon and Gold finished as runner-up in the PSAC Tournament for a fourth time. KU also finished runner-up for a fifth time in 2014. The Golden Bears have never won the PSAC Tournament despite appearing in it for 12 of the past 13 seasons.
Kutztown enters the postseason playing some of its best soccer of the season, coming off back-to-back shutouts in which the Maroon and Gold scored a combined nine goals. KU's nine goals in a two-match stretch were its most since the 2013 season, and the Golden Bears had not scored at least four goals in back-to-back matches since their first two matches of 2010.
Winners of seven in a row and 12 of its previous 13, Kutztown ended the regular season second in the PSAC in both scoring average (2.22) and opponent's scoring average (0.67). The Golden Bears' +1.55 scoring margin also ranks second, as does their 19.0 shots per match and nine shutouts. KU leads the league in corners per match (5.28) and fewest fouls conceded per match (5.72).
Freshmen Griffith and
Maddie Mohr (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) are the catalysts of the offensive attack as both are tied for the team-lead with seven goals, a number that ranks seventh in the PSAC. Mohr is also tied for third in the conference with six assists and is fifth with 20 points, while Griffith is one shy of the league-lead with four game-winning goals.
Senior
Alaina Curry (York, Pa./Dallastown Area) and freshman
Emily Zwiercan (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) also find themselves in the top-10 of the PSAC rankings. Curry's team-best 48 shots are eighth in the conference, while Zwiercan is tied for sixth with five assists. The duo is third and fourth on the team with 13 points and 11 points, respectively.
Defensively,
Katie Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township),
Cassie Schmidt (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall),
Olivia Novak (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central (Temple)),
Kristina Miller (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn),
Morgan Staley (Landenberg, Pa./Kennett) and
Dana Wong (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) have been among the group that has protected goalkeepers
Imani Taylor (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and
Jenna Bracken (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional), who have each started nine matches.
The two post nearly identical stat lines. Taylor is 7-2 with a 0.55 goals against average and 0.861 save percentage, while Bracken is 8-1 with a 0.78 goals against average and 0.829 save percentage. Taylor ranks second in the PSAC in goals against average and is third in save percentage, with Bracken right behind her in sixth in both categories, respectively.
Either one of those two will have the responsibility of slowing down a streaking Bloomsburg team that won its last four matches to earn a spot in the PSAC Tournament by one point. The Huskies defeated Clarion 2-1 on Saturday night with an 82nd-minute goal to clinch their postseason berth on the final day of the season.
Bloomsburg (9-6-2, 8-6-2) is in the top-eight of the PSAC in both scoring average (1.35) and opponent's scoring average (0.76), the latter of which ranks fifth. Devon Haviland has been in net for all 17 of the Huskies matches this season and leads the league with eight shutouts. She is fifth in conference with a .732 goals against average and eighth with a .819 save percentage.
Jessica Supp and Allie Barber lead Bloomsburg with 11 points each. Supp has scored a team-best five goals, while Barber is atop the team and second in the league with seven assists.
