KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped its last home match of the season on Saturday, falling to Gannon University (19-25, 17-25, 20-25) on Kutztown's Senior Day in a Pennyslvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest inside of Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears honored
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City),
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic),
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East),
Rachael Picozzi (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) and
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) prior to the beginning of the match for each of their accomplishments and contributions to the program.
In the beginning of the first set, Kutztown was holding its own against one of the best teams in PSAC. Locked up at 12 apiece, the set was full of back-and-forth competition. Down 19-15, KU scored three straight to bring the score to 19-18. Unfortunately, the Golden Bears would score only one more point as Gannon would take the set, 25-19.
Once again, the second set of the match was close in the beginning. Locked at 8-8, the Golden Bears were going point-for-point with the Golden Knights. However, a 7-2 run by Gannon opened things up, and Gannon would go on to take the set 25-17.
Kutztown (5-19, 2-11 PSAC) scratched and clawed in the final set of the match, scoring three straight points down 23-17. With the score at 23-20, Gannon called a timeout to regroup and ultimately took the set and the match 25-20.
The Golden Bear offense was paced by
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)), who led the team with 10 kills. Wakelee was right behind Moyer with seven kills, while also contributing two aces, two blocks and a team-leading 15 digs, one shy of her career-high.
Conti ended the match with 19 assists. This brings her career total to 3,160, only 24 shy of tying Yvonne Shimp for the second-most in program history with five matches still remaining.
In their final home games, Zielinski, Picozzi and Brake did what they could to spark a Golden Bear victory. Zielinski finished the contest with a team-high two blocks, while Picozzi added two kills and Brake finished one dig shy of Wakelee's team-high 15 digs.
Gannon (22-3, 10-2) found most of its production from Kelsey Ansec, who finished the contest with 18 kills. Carolyn Knollman led the match with 29 assists, while Sara Crandall had a match-high 24 digs.
The Golden Bears will start their five-game road trip on Friday, Nov. 4 against Slippery Rock. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
