KUTZTOWN, PA. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball out-blocked West Chester, 6-5, in a loss (15-25, 15-25, 14-25) to the Golden Rams in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Friday night in Keystone Arena as part of Homecoming weekend.
Included in those six blocks were a season-high three solo blocks, with one each from
Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)),
Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) and
Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area).
Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) led KU (3-18, 0-10 PSAC) with three total blocks, with Zielinksi and
Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) each adding two.
Moyer recorded 11 of Kutztown's 20 kills, on .273 hitting, for her 17th double-digit kill performance.
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) led KU with 13 digs, the 17th time she has finished in double-digits in digs, while
Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) had a team-high 14 assists.
West Chester (16-7, 4-6 PSAC) had four players with seven or more kills, led by Peighton Wright and Karleigh Lutzt recording 14 and 13 on .458 and .478 hitting, respectively. Allie Duffy added nine kills on .471 hitting as the Golden Rams hit .308 as a team, while holding Kutztown to a .063 percentage.
Jillian Grammer had 39 assists and Nicki Yates led the match with 16 digs.
West Chester pulled away in the first set by taking 12 of the first 16 points. The Golden Rams then had to hold off KU in the second despite jumping out to a 5-1 advantage. The Maroon and Gold got as close as 9-8 on a
Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) service ace, but WCU responded with the next 11 points.
Moyer gave Kutztown an early 2-0 lead with back-to-back kills in the third set, but West Chester completed the sweep by breaking the set open moments later with eight unanswered points to make the score 15-6.
KU completes its Homecoming weekend tomorrow, hosting Cheyney at 1 p.m.
