KU Records Best Hitting Percentage of Season in Sweep of Cheyney

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team hit a season-high .317 percent, including .478 in the first set, as it swept Cheyney (25-8, 26-24, 25-12) on Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena as part of Homecoming festivities.

KU (4-18, 1-10 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)) also set new season-highs for a three-set match with 41 kills and 32 assists.  The Golden Bears had a season-low eight errors.

Brittney Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain (Lock Haven)) and Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) charged the offensive attack, finishing with 13 and 12 kills on .333 and .308 hitting, respectively.

Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) added four kills, while Taylor Brown (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) and Niki Carpenter (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion Area) each had three. The trio did not record an error.

Brown and Carpenter also paced Kutztown with two block assists each.

Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) recorded her sixth double-double of the year with a match-high 22 assists and team-high 12 digs.

Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) and Amanda Meck (Fleetwood, Pa./Fleetwood Area) each set new career-highs with six and four assists, respectively, while Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) was second on the team with eight digs.

Cheyney's Chelsea Hutson tied Moyer with a match-high 13 kills and finished one dig shy of a double-double. Akia Harris led the match with 18 digs.

KU scored the final 11 points of the first set en route to the 25-8 opening scoreline. With Moyer producing two service aces in the run, Howe added three kills and Brown tallied the final two points with back-to-back kills.

Cheyney (3-17, 0-11) responded impressively in the second. With Kutztown jumping out to an early 9-4 advantage, the Wolves came back to tie it at 9-9 and even took an 18-14 lead of their own. They held onto a three-point lead as late as 23-20 before the Maroon and Gold came back to even the set once more, 23-23.

Then, facing set-point following a Cheyney kill, KU answered with the final three points on consecutive kills from Zielinski and Howe before a Sophie Kerschner (Clinton, N.J./North Hunterdon) service ace finished off the comeback.

Kutztown carried that momentum into the third, taking six of the first seven points before eventually holding multiple leads as large as 13.

KU completes its home-schedule next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Mercyhurst on Friday, Oct. 28. The Golden Bears then host Gannon for Senior Day the following afternoon, on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m.
