GREENSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) continued her remarkable scoring steak, netting two goals that were assisted by
Madison Wampler (York, Pa./West York Area) in the span of 4:04 early in the first half for her third consecutive two-goal game as the No. 9 Kutztown University field hockey team won its third straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Seton Hill 3-1.
Prior to the streak, Tiwold had never recorded a two-goal game in her first 66 career matches. She now has three as she took over the team-lead with her seventh and eighth goals this season to move into a tie for fifth in the PSAC.
Coming into the afternoon having scored Kutztown's previous four goals in shutout victories over Limestone and Mansfield, Tiwold became the first Golden Bear in the last 14 seasons to score six consecutive KU goals.
Not to be forgotten is Wampler, whose two-assist performance was the first of the junior's career.
With the win, Kutztown (10-5, 4-3 PSAC) reached double-digit victories for the second consecutive season. More importantly, the Maroon and Gold moved into a tie for fifth in the PSAC, one game ahead of seventh place Indiana (Pa.) for the final PSAC Tournament berth with three matches remaining.
KU applied the early pressure, registering five shots in the opening nine minutes, including attempts on net by Wampler and
Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) in the third and ninth minute, respectively. Moments after that Stewart shot, the Golden Bears finally converted on the pressure when Wampler set up Tiwold on a pass from inside the circle for the early lead 8:37 in.
It took just over four minutes to double that lead as again it was Wampler setting up Tiwold. The score followed three successive penalty corners, as well as a blocked shot off the stick of
Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh), and the advantage was pushed to 2-0 with 22:19 remaining in the first half.
Seton Hill (2-12, 0-7) did manage to cut the deficit in half a little over seven minutes later through Wynnsome Gadson's goal, and the score remained 2-1 for the final 15:15 of the opening half, but it was Kutztown that came out and added insurance minutes after the break.
Seconds after a
Micaela Beaty (Drexel Hill, Pa./Archbishop Prendergast) shot was saved, Stewart sent a blast high over the goalkeeper to reestablish KU's two-goal lead at the 29:28 mark with her seventh goal of the year.
Following that score, much of the game was played in the midfield as the two teams combined for a total of six shot attempts and four penalty corners in the final 35 minutes. That came after Kutztown outshout Seton Hill 9-3 in the first half, helping lead to a 12-6 advantage in the match. The Golden Bears also had a 7-4 edge in corners.
Making three saves,
Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) lowered her goals against average to 1.14, good for fifth in the PSAC.
KU now turns its attention to its home-finale, Friday's top-10 showdown with No. 4 Millersville (12-3, 5-2) at Andre Reed Stadium at 4 p.m. as part of Homecoming weekend.
