No. 9 Field Hockey Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 2-1 Setback against No. 4 Millersville

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The No. 9 Kutztown University field hockey team suffered a tough one-goal loss on Friday afternoon, falling 2-1 at the hands of No. 4 Millersville in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) battle at Andre Reed Stadium.

Kutztown (10-6, 4-4 PSAC) and Millersville (13-3, 6-2) were scoreless through the first 23 minutes of the game, but Erica Tarsi of Millersville connected for the first goal of the game on an assist from Katie DeLuca following a corner.

Millersville lengthened its lead to 2-0 about seven minutes later on a goal from Aliza Mizak. She dribbled into the circle off of a corner and found the left side of the cage to give the Marauders a commanding lead just before halftime.

The Golden Bears cut the Marauder lead to 2-1 with a second half goal with just 13 minutes to go in the game. Senior Megan Tiwold (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) connected for her ninth goal of the season on a deflection after Madison Stewart (New Castle, Del./William Penn) launched the ball into traffic. Stewart and Courtney Konowal (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) were each credited with an assist on the goal.

The game remained at 2-1 for the rest of the contest, but KU was able to secure two untimed penalty corners at the end of the game. Stewart and Mackenzie Furhman each had a shot attempt in the closing moments of the game, but were unable to score and send it to overtime.

KU outshot Millersville, 13-11, and had 11 penalty corners, while the Marauders recorded 10.

Millersville held a key advantage in the game with eight shots-on-goal to just three for KU. Stewart led KU with two, while Mizak and Tarsi both recorded two for the Marauders.

Chardonnay Hope (New Castle, Del./William Penn) recorded six saves for the Golden Bears and Samantha Rumler picked up the win in goal for Millersville with two saves.

KU sits in sixth place in the PSAC standings, a half-game ahead of Slippery Rock, while Millersville is in third, a game behind East Stroudsburg for second.

The Golden Bears return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 4 p.m. for a PSAC matchup at Shippensburg. They conclude the regular-season on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. in a road matchup at Indiana (PA).
