EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. –
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) ran for 261 of Kutztown University's 459 rushing yards, both of which marked school-records in a 49-30 victory at East Stroudsburg University Saturday night. It was KU's fourth straight win to remain in first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.
The Golden Bears (4-3, 4-0 PSAC East) are off to their best start to conference play since starting 6-0 in 2010. KU holds a one-game lead in the PSAC East over Shippensburg and West Chester.
KU led 21-7 early in the second quarter, 21-16 at halftime after a late ESU spurt, but pulled away with 21 unanswered points in the second half for its sixth win over ESU in the last seven years.
Reynolds averaged 13.7 yards-per-carry, finishing with 19 carries for a school-record 261 yards. He broke Maurice Adams' previous record of 259 in 2004. Notably, Reynolds broke Adams' record despite having nearly half of many carries (Adams had 35).
He also broke the school-record for all-purpose yards in a game at 345. The previous record was 308 by Elfren Quiles in 2007.
Reynolds' three touchdowns marked his third multi-TD game of the year, as he has scored at least one touchdown in 6-of-7 games this season. The redshirt-sophomore increased to 12 rushing touchdowns this season, tied for fifth all-time in school history.
It won't be seen on the final stat sheet, but Reynolds also ran a 90-yard kick return for a touchdown, but had it called back for a penalty. For the year, Reynolds has run for 905 yards, 95 shy of being the seventh player in school history to run for 1,000 yards in a season.
As a team, Kutztown's 459 rushing yards were a school-record, surpassing the previous record of 400-even against Millersville last season. Six of KU's seven touchdowns were rushing touchdowns, the most rushing TDs in a game for KU since 1999.
James Wah Jr. (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) ran for two fourth-quarter touchdowns. He finished with 68 yards, highlighted by a late 42-yard touchdown run.
Quarterback
Collin DiGalbo (Secane, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) threw for 209 yards and ran for 70 more. He threw and ran for a touchdown and moves to 4-0 as a starter.
Saturday night was a chilly night in the Poconos, and marked the first time KU and ESU played under the lights at ESU's EIler-Martin Stadium.
Kutztown held a healthy balance of passing and rushing yards. KU put up 668 yards of total offense – 459 on the ground and 209 through the air – the most for the program since a record 723 in 2012.
Defensively,
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) led the way with 10 tackles, his 12th career 10+ tackle game. Saturday marked his 30th consecutive start.
Ronny Tomasetti (Dickson City, Pa./Mid-Valley) had 1.5 sacks to lead KU's three sacks on the night.
Jake Perry (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) hauled in his PSAC-leading fourth and fifth interceptions of the season, both of which were in the endzone.
Kutztown opened the game turning the ball over on downs, but responded with three straight touchdowns to jump out 21-7 early in the second quarter.
ESU struck first Saturday night with an 80-yard touchdown drive, capped with Robert Healy's school-record-tying 15th rushing touchdown of the season. It didn't take long for KU to answer, needing just two plays. Following the kick return, a 48-yard run up the middle by Reynolds and a 17-yard touchdown run by DiGalbo tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter.
Perry hauled in his fourth interception of the season in the endzone the following drive to give KU the ball with a chance to take the lead. Driving up near midfield, Reynolds ran off right tackle, and with DiGalbo ahead as his lead blocker, ran 51 yards down the sideline for a touchdown – putting him over 100 rushing yards in the first quarter and giving KU a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.
The defense forced a three-and-out the following drive, and the offense picked up right where it left off. A four-play, 69-yard drive was capped with a 42-yard touchdown pass to
Nathan Hollander (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) to give KU a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Perry hauled in his second interception of the night later in the quarter. With ESU throwing to the endzone,
Lance Deane Jr. (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) deflected the pass right to Perry for a takeaway in the endzone.
It marked Perry's second, two-interception game of the season (Seton Hill).
ESU got itself back in the game with 10 points in the final 5:00 of the half. A 38-yard field goal, a KU three-and-out, and a 38-yard touchdown pass down the sidelines sent the Golden Bears into the locker room leading 21-16.
Through most of a defensive third quarter, Kutztown put together an 11-play, 68-yard drive that was capped with a brilliant 17-yard touchdown run by Reynolds, his second of the night. Running up the middle, Reynolds broke a tackle while he was spinning over a defender to stay on his feet, and scampered in the remaining five yards for the touchdown. It put KU up 29-16 late in the third quarter.
East Stroudsburg, who entered the game atop the PSAC East in rushing yards, was held to 88 rushing yards through three quarters, but finished with 150 after a strong end for the Warriors. Healy ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns, setting the school-record with 16 rushing touchdowns this season.
Kutztown looks ahead to homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 22, when it hosts Lock Haven University at Andre Reed Stadium at 1:05 p.m.
