WFMZ Video HighlightsEAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's basketball team fell to East Stroudsburg University at the buzzer on Saturday afternoon, 66-65, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) showdown at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Kutztown (7-9, 4-8 PSAC East) fell behind early to East Stroudsburg (8-8, 6-6), but managed to keep it close throughout the duration of the first half.
Kutztown trailed 15-10 after the first quarter, but used an 11-4 run in the first five minutes of the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead with 5:19 to go. The final five minutes of the half went back-and-forth with East Stroudsburg taking a 31-29 lead into the second half.
Junior forward
Kelsey Watson (Collegeville, Pa./Methacton) paced the Golden Bears in the first half with 12 points and four rebounds.
Kutztown outscored East Stroudsburg 19-15 in the third quarter that included a 7-0 spurt to close out the period. It took a 48-46 lead into the final quarter of play.
KU led 61-55 in the fourth quarter with 2:40 to play, but East Stroudsburg went on a 7-0 run in the next 1:40 of play to take a 62-61 lead into the final minute of action.
Natalya Lee (Feasterville, Pa./Rancocas Valley Regional) made a layup with 40 seconds to play, but the Warriors countered right back with a layup by Imani Brown. Lee was then sent to the free-throw line with a chance to take the lead. She knocked down both to give KU a 65-64 lead with six seconds to go, but a putback layup by Rachel Falkowski of East Stroudsburg gave the Warriors the 66-65 victory as time ran out.
Lee had a team-high 19 points (9-10 FT) and nine rebounds for KU. Watson's double-double streak ended at five games. She posted 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Junior
Jenna Altomare (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa./State College Area) extended her streak to 16 consecutive games with a 3-pointer. She recorded 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and six rebounds.
Freshman
Mariah Maciejewski (Dunmore, Pa./Dunmore) recorded eight points and 10 rebounds in her first start of the season. She also had two steals and a block.
Both teams struggled from the field, with East Stroudsburg at 41 percent and KU at 35 percent. East Stroudsburg held a decisive 21-5 advantage in bench points and had 11 blocks to just four for KU.
The Warriors had four players score in double-figures. Falkowski and Rebecca Rutkowski each had 13 points. Allison Howard had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Tyeca Reviere scored 11 points.
Kutztown returns to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 5:30 p.m. in a PSAC matchup with Mansfield University inside Keystone Arena.
