Women’s Volleyball Drops Season-Opener to Adelphi

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team won the opening set Friday afternoon, but ultimately fell to Adelphi University, 3-1, inside a steamy Heiges Field House on the campus of Shippensburg University.
 
Kutztown (0-1) endured an opening set that saw 10 ties and six lead changes. The Golden Bears pushed a lead to 20-14 before Adelphi (1-0) gained momentum and came back to make it 22-21. KU eventually outlasted the Panthers to take the first set, 26-24.
 
In the second frame, the Maroon and Gold had a great opportunity to take a 2-0 advantage after they stretched their lead to 19-15. However, Adelphi battled back to win the set, 28-26. Adelphi then took the next two sets, 25-19 and 25-21, to win the match.
 
Senior Audrey Stringer (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded a team-high 12 kills and five blocks. She now has 771 career kills to move her into the top-10 in KU history at ninth, and is six shy of tying Katie Miller for eighth all-time. Stringer has also recorded double-digit kills in 16 of her last 21 matches dating back to last season.

The only other Golden Bear to record double-digit kills was freshman Jessica Howe (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area), who finished with 11 kills and six digs.
 
Freshman Shannon Restrepo (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) doubled up with 14 assists and 13 digs to go along with five kills. Junior Anna Conti (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) surpassed 2,000 career assists on Friday, the fifth player to do so in school history, as she dished out 20 assists, recorded 10 digs and a team-high three service aces. She has 2,015 career assists.
 
Madison Brake (Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) notched a team-best 25 digs, three shy of her career-high, while Tori Wakelee (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) finished with 15 digs and six kills. Zandria Zielinski (York, Pa./York Catholic) and Lauren Szkolnicki (Springfield, Pa./Country Day School of the Sacred Heart) tallied six and four kills, respectively.
 
The Golden Bears resume play Saturday, Sept. 5, when they square off with Wilmington (Del.) at 11:30 a.m. and Davis & Elkins at 4:30 p.m. in the team's final two matches at the Shippensburg Tournament.
