Running Game Returns in Football Victory at Cheyney

CHEYNEY, Pa. – It took a half for the Kutztown University football team to build an offensive rhythm, but once it did, KU churned out a season-high 277 rushing yards in a 34-0 win at Cheyney University in the first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division schedule.

The Golden Bears (2-2, 1-0 PSAC East) led 6-0 and nearly trailed at halftime to the host Wolves (0-4, 0-1). KU entered the game with the top passing offense in the league but was unable to find any answers to a strong opening 30 minutes from the Cheyney defense.

KU committed to the run in the second half and went on to score touchdowns on its first four drives of the second half to take control of its division-opener. It was by-far the best rushing performance of the year for the Golden Bears, who won their 22nd straight game against Cheyney.

Three KU backs took double-digit carries and all averaged more than six yards per carry. Redshirt freshman Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns, most of which came in the second half. Darrell Scott (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was the sparkplug in the third quarter as KU's downhill runner and ended with 89 yards on 11 carries. Senior Terry Williams (West Orange, N.J./Cosby (Phoenix College)) had a team-high 12 carries for 77 yards and two scores (one rushing, one receiving).

Kutztown's defense played just as well at stopping the run on defense. Cheyney totaled 14 rushing yards and failed to score for the eighth straight quarter against KU, dating back to a 74-0 KU win last year. It marked the third shutout of head coach Jim Clements' tenure at KU. Notably, Clements is 6-0 at KU when holding his opponents to less than 100 rushing yards.

Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) tied the program's career receiving touchdown record with the 23rd of his career. He tied Josh Smith's and KU Hall of Famer Mark Steinmeyer's previous record. Reed had seven catches for 91 yards and score on Saturday. He owns the school's career receiving yards record and moved into 43rd in PSAC history with 2,309. He moved into fourth all-time in career receptions with 161.

In doing so, Reed extended his consecutive streak of catching a pass to 37 games, the most of active players in the PSAC.

Defensively, linebacker Tajier Jefferson (East Orange, N.J./Queen of Peace) stopped Cheyney runners at the line all day and was the premier defender for KU. He had a team-high 11 tackles with four tackles-for-loss and a half-sack.

Kurt Kenny (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) had 10 tackles and an interception, Chris McMonagle (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Zameer McDowell (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford (California (PA))) each had 1.5 sacks and Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) added an interception for the KU defense.

The Golden Bears return home to Andre Reed Stadium next week, Saturday, Oct. 3 under the lights to face Millersville University at 6:05 p.m. Stick around for post-game fireworks, sponsored by PSECU.
