Photo Gallery Coming Next Week KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown University's offense did everything it could to put up points and apply any form of pressure on visiting Gannon University on Saturday, but the Golden Bears simply could not keep up with or slow down Gannon's prolific offense in a 66-31 defeat at University Field at Andre Reed Stadium.
1,202 yards of combined total offense were posted Saturday. Gannon posted 707 yards with 295 coming on the ground, as KU posted 495 yards of total offense with 412 coming through the air.
Despite the strong offensive output for the Golden Bears (1-2), it was no match for the Golden Knights (3-0), who scored touchdowns on their first four drives and scored points on 11 of their first 12 drives of the game.
Chad Barton (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) completed 30-of-43 passes for a career-high 412 yards and four touchdowns. He moved up to fifth all-time at KU with 328 career completions and eighth with 548 attempts.
Kellen Williams (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg), this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Offensive Athlete of the Week, had another strong day for the KU offense. He led the team with nine catches for 176 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard strike from Barton over the top in the second quarter that broke up a 28-point scoring streak for Gannon to open the game.
Williams moved into eighth all-time at KU with 18 career touchdown catches and 10th all-time with 121 career receptions and 1,682 receiving yards.
One week after becoming Kutztown's all-time leader in receiving yards,
Kodi Reed (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) posted eight catches for 95 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. He moved into a tie for fifth in KU history with 154 career receptions, is one touchdown shy of tying KU's career receiving touchdowns record of 23, and improved upon his school-record receiving yardage. Reed has 2,218 career receiving yards for 50th in PSAC history.
Freshman
Craig Reynolds (Willow Grove, Pa./Abington) had eight catches for 73 yards as KU's top trio combined for 344 of the team's 412 passing yards. Fellow freshman
Ryan Hubley (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) hauled in his first career touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.
Three Golden Bears had double-digit tackles. Junior linebacker
Zack Delp (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) posted double figures for the third straight game with a team-high and career-high-tying 13 and a game-high six solo tackles.
Kenny Williams (Conshohocken, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh (West Chester)) had a career-high 11 tackles in the secondary and
Darryl Mintz (Philadelphia, Pa./Roman Catholic) added a career-high 10 on the outside.
Kurt Kenny (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) had a career-high nine tackles and
Lance Deane Jr. (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) had a career-high-tying six.
Gannon quarterback Liam Nadler proved he is one of, if not the best quarterback in the PSAC. He threw for 412 yards, the same as Barton, and completed 28-of-36 passes with five touchdown passes while extending his streak to 265 passes without throwing an interception, spanning eight games. It marked the first time since 2012 that the KU defense allowed a 400-yard passer with five touchdowns.
Eli Quinter and Jesstin Hamm each had 100-yard receiving games. Hamm led the way with seven catches for 138 yards and three touchdowns, while Quinter posted 104 yards on nine catches.
Gannon's running game was just as effective as its passing game. Brock Jones ran for 191 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, marking the second straight week an opposing running back ran for 190+ yards against Kutztown.
Kutztown opens PSAC-play next week on Saturday, Sept. 26 with a 1 p.m. kickoff on the road at Cheyney University.
