KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Despite amassing 19 shots Saturday afternoon, the Kutztown University women's soccer team pushed just one past the goalkeeper, and ultimately fell to Seton Hill University, 2-1, as heavy downpours fell upon Keystone Field.
Kutztown (2-1-1, 2-1 PSAC) opened the scoring in the 13th minute when freshman
Felicia Silveira (Hampton, N.J./Voorhees) scored on a header following a scramble for a rebound off the goalkeeper.
Seton Hill (2-2, 2-2 PSAC) had a handful of opportunities in the first half, and despite trailing 1-0, went into the break with a 12-8 advantage in shots.
Coming out of halftime the Griffins had the Golden Bears on their heels and scored twice in the first 15 minutes of the second period.
As the drizzle from the first half turned into a continuous, heavy rain, KU dialed up the pressure and continued to fight. The Golden Bears finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots during the second half but were unable to cut into the deficit.
With 18 seconds remaining in the game, senior
Diana Malanga (Lavallette, N.J./St. Rose) released a shot from inside the box but her attempt was foiled by an outstanding save from Seton Hill's goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner.
Malanga finished with a team-high five shots (three on goal),
Alyssa Ryan (North Wales, Pa./Wissahickon) recorded four shots, and
Erica Monte Carlo (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) took two shots (both on goal).
KU goalkeeper
Deanna Messner (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) made a season-high eight saves.
Overall, the Golden Bears held a 19-17 advantage in shots and finished with 12 corner kicks compared to just three for SHU. Both teams ended with 10 shots on goal.
Kutztown travels to West Chester on Tuesday to take on the Golden Rams at 3 p.m.
