Baseball Splits Lopsided Contests at Mansfield Sunday

HTML Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team started off Sunday afternoon on a strong note, taking the opener 9-3 over Mansfield University. The Mounties responded heavily in the nightcap, routing the Golden Bears 17-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division split from MU's Shaute Field.

Kutztown (17-18, 8-16 PSAC E) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Ricky Gorrell led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. Brandon Martinez brought Gorrell home from second with an RBI-single, then stole his team-high 11th base of the season. Matthew Armour plated himself and Martinez with his second home run in the last three days.

The Maroon and Gold extended their advantage to 5-0 in the top of the fourth, starting with a leadoff double from Ryan Cox. Travis Kreitz waited out a full count for the walk, and Ben Eppley advanced both runners with a successful sacrifice bunt. Derian Sarlat drove in both Golden Bears with a two-RBI single down the left field line.

Mansfield (11-21, 8-14) got on the board in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff home run on the very first pitch.

Kutztown sealed the deal with four more runs in the top of the sixth. After falling in a hole with two, quick outs, KU was able to load the bases. Martinez tripled down the left field line to score all three runners, then crossed the plate himself after a wild pitch.

The Mounties picked up two final runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little too late.

Kutztown's Matt Swarmer tossed his team-leading third complete game of the season to get the win from the mound. He struck out nine batters, his third-highest in a game this season. All three runs scored against Swarmer were earned, and MU mounted nine hits.

Martinez finished with a season-high four RBI with two runs scored and two hits. Gorrell went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with two runs scored and a stolen base.

In the nightcap, Mansfield launched one home run after another to compile the large victory. The damage started in the bottom of the third, when MU's Jacob Molison recorded a four-RBI inside-the-park home run to build a 5-0 lead.

In the fourth, Mansfield smacked back-to-back home runs to score three runners, and closed out the inning with a three-run shot over the center-field wall. Four more hits in the fifth inning led to another four-run period for the home team.

Kutztown notched six hits in the setback, led by a 2-for-2 performance from Kreitz with the team's only extra-base hit. Martinez, Brady McNab, Drew DeShong, and Thomas Romano all tallied a hit.

The trio of Eric Hartranft, Matt Matricardi, and David Brown split the pitching duties for the Golden Bears, with Hartranft receiving the start and his first loss of the season. MU's Matt Engler struck out seven KU batters in a complete game.

With Monday's doubleheader in Philadelphia cancelled, the Golden Bears return to action Thursday, April 23 for a single game at Wilmington University, starting at 3 p.m.
