HTML Box Score

WILMINGTON, Del. – The Kutztown University baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Thursday in non-conference action from Wilson Field, but 27th-ranked Wilmington University produced a big sixth inning to come back and down the Golden Bears, 9-2.

Kutztown (17-19) had its bats rolling early with a leadoff single from Ben Eppley. Ricky Gorrell reached on a fielder's choice, and Matthew Armour brought Gorrell home from first with an RBI-double down the right-field line. The Golden Bears had an opportunity to break the game open in the opening stanza, but left three runners stranded.

Gorrell scored again for the Maroon and Gold in the top of the third, leading off the inning with a walk and then stealing second to get into scoring position. Armour singled up the middle to advance Gorrell to third, allowing Thomas Romano to execute a sacrifice fly to right field.

Wilmington (28-9) tallied a run in the third and two more in the fifth, before going up big in the sixth. The Golden Bears forced a groundout to start the inning, but Wilmington strung together four singles, a triple, and a double to plate six runs and go up 9-2.

Kutztown had chances in the final three innings, but left six runners on base and three in scoring positions.

Armour led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Brandon Cholish batted 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded a stolen base. Brady McNab, Derian Sarlat, and Eppley each went 1-for-2 in the box.

Peter Masterson started on the mound for KU, pitching 3.2 innings with six hits, one earned run, and two strikeouts. Matt Matricardi, Cameron Mathis, David Brown, and Eric Moul each tossed an inning, with Matricardi receiving the loss.

Matt Frost earned his first win of the season for Wilmington, pitching five innings with four hits, two earned runs, and three strikeouts. First basemen Frank Samluk batted 4-for-5 for the Wildcats, with Christian Adorno and Josh Swirchak combining for seven RBI.
