KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team squared off against the seventh-ranked Lakers of Mercyhurst University on Friday afternoon at Keystone Field, suffering a 17-6 defeat in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

The Golden Bears (1-12, 0-9 PSAC) were hanging with the Mercyhurst (12-2, 8-1) powerhouse offense early on in the first half as they trailed 3-2, but failed to keep up with the Lakers. Merychurst found itself leading by a score of 10-3 at the end of the first half and continued to keep the pressure on the Golden Bears. Becca Himes, who ranks fourth in the PSAC in assists (42), was the playmaker for the Lakers as she finished with three assists and two goals.

The second half of the contest was unfortunately a similar result for the Maroon and Gold, with Mercyhurst tacking on seven more goals as opposed to KU's three. Senior Jillian Spencer was the go-to target for the Golden Bears on offense as she netted four goals, marking her fourth hat trick of the season. Senior Taylor Stone and freshman Lauren Huggins also contributed a goal apiece.

On the defensive end, senior Kelsey Halligan caused two turnovers and sophomore Courtney O'Neill came away with three groundballs. O'Neill currently leads the team in groundballs this season with 41.

Freshman Jen Bergey was in the net for the Golden Bears and she was able to tally six saves. She also came up with two groundballs and caused a turnover. Merychurst goalie Kyra Maludy stopped nine shots.

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 18, the Golden Bears will celebrate Senior Day, while looking to defeat PSAC opponent Slippery Rock University at Keystone Field. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
