KU-AC HTML Box Score CLERMONT, Flor. – The Kutztown University softball team showcased late-game toughness on defense to earn one-run victories over the University of Findlay (2-1) and Assumption College (3-2) on Saturday to open the team's spring break trip in Florida.

Dominique Ficara and
Savannah Nierintz each picked up complete game victories on Saturday. Ficara, a senior, pitched the opener against Findlay and allowed five hits to move to 2-0 in the circle. Nierintz, a sophomore, is 3-0 this season and let up eight hits in the nightcap against Assumption.
Danielle Sienko hit the game-winning RBI double in the third inning in the opener. KU took the 1-0 lead in the second off an RBI single from
Marissa Linquist, but Findlay matched the run with a RBI triple the following half-inning.
After taking the one-run lead in the third, Ficara retired the fourth and fifth innings in order with six groundouts. Findlay put the tying run on second with two outs in the sixth, and on third with two outs in the third, but the KU coaching staff stuck with Ficara, who forced two groundouts back to the pitcher to end the game.
Freshman
Sam Fraser hit the game-winning RBI single in the fifth inning of game two against Assumption. KU led 2-0 with a sacrifice fly by
Colleen Smith in the first and a RBI single to left by Linquist in the second, but Assumption responded with two runs in the third to tie the game at 2-2.
In the fifth, Linquist led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Fraser followed the Linquist double with a single to drive in Linquist for the game-winning run.
Assumption put a runner in scoring position in the bottom half of the fifth, but lined into a double play to end the threat. Nierintz retired the side in order in the sixth and allowed just one single in the seventh along with three groundouts to pull out the win.
The Golden Bears return to action in Florida tomorrow, Sunday March 8 against Concordia (Minn.) at 5 p.m. and Northern State at 7 p.m.
