Spencer-Fueled Comeback Falls Short for Women’s Lacrosse

HTML Box Score

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Jillian Spencer tallied five goals to lead the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team on a second-half comeback against Shippensburg University on Tuesday afternoon, but the visiting Raiders took the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest, 12-10, from Andre Reed Stadium.

Kutztown (1-7, 0-5 PSAC) was held scoreless for the first 17 minutes of play, while Shippensburg (3-7, 1-4) raced out to an early lead. Spencer scored two goals in the first half, but the Golden Bears found themselves in a 9-2 hole at the intermission.

The Raiders struck first at the onset of the second half, but as the snow started to pick up, so did the Kutztown attack. The Maroon and Gold notched seven of the next eight goals to cut the deficit to two (11-9) with just under 10 minutes left to play. Ship's Max Barkley and KU's Taylor Stone each found the back of the net in the final minutes, but the Raiders were able to hold off for the 12-10 win.

Kutztown certainly didn't suffer from a lack of chances, as the Golden Bears fired off a season-high 37 shots compared to Shippensburg's 23. SU goalkeeper Ally Frymoyer played a critical role in keeping her squad ahead with multiple big saves, finishing the day with 13 stops.

Spencer added three goals in the second half to tie her career-high of five in a game, the fourth time the senior has done so at KU. She also ranked second on the team with five groundballs and secured a team-high-tying four draw controls.

Stone and Sarah Gabriele were both active on the attack, scoring two goals each. Gabriele also added an assist, three groundballs, and three caused turnovers.

Lauren Huggins found Devan Davis in front of the net for a second-half strike and Davis picked up the assist on KU's final goal of the game. Huggins added four groundballs and two caused turnovers on the other side of the ball.

Courtney O'Neill led the defense with seven groundballs, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Abby Cox recorded seven saves in net.

Shippensburg's veteran attackers carried the weight as Sheila Johnson netted four goals and Courtney Kennedy tallied two. Amanda Frank dished five assists and Barkley picked up a game-high five draw controls.

Kutztown remains home this week, facing off against Georgian Court on Thursday, April 2 at 4 p.m. in nonconference action.
