Sarah Gabriele scored her third and fourth goals of the game to give the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team a one-goal lead with under six minutes to play, but the Philadelphia University Rams knotted it up with 2:53 remaining and went on to score four in the overtime period to win 15-11 in nonconference action from Ravenhill Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Kutztown (1-2) came out on fire, scoring the first six goals of the game behind two from Gabrielle and two from
Devan Davis. The momentum shifted to Philadelphia (1-3), as the Rams netted five-straight to cut the Golden Bears lead to one at halftime.
The Rams took the lead right away after the break, followed by the teams trading blows until KU found itself down one with under 10 minutes to play. Gabriele took matters into her own hands, scoring two unassisted goals to put the Maroon and Gold back on top. A free-position goal from Philly's Elizabeth Seitzinger in the final three minutes sent the game to overtime.
Tied 11-11 after full time, Philadelphia scored the only four goals in the overtime period to secure the victory.
Gabriele led the way with four goals on five shots, along with two groundballs, a draw control, and a caused turnover. The newcomer now leads the team with eight goals through three games so far this season.
Davis added an assist to her two goals and snagged two draw controls.
Madison Carlucci also recorded two goals and an assist.
Jillian Spencer,
Cara Lord, and
Taylor Sandin netted a goal each to round out the KU scorers. Spencer and
Lauren Huggins also dished out an assist.
Spencer and
Jillian Figel each co-led the squad in groundballs (4) and caused turnovers (2).
Courtney O'Neill secured a game- and career-high six draw controls.
Abby Cox played the full 66 minutes between the pipes, recording 11 saves.
Seitzinger was the Rams' leading scorer with four goals, followed by Isabella DiGnazio and Lauren Hartman each with three. Goalkeeper Maria Matteis recorded 12 saves.
The Golden Bears have their home- and conference-opener this Saturday, March 21 against East Stroudsburg University. The game has been moved over to the turf at Andre Reed Stadium and pushed up to 11 a.m.
