Women’s Lacrosse Drops PSAC Opener at Andre Reed Stadium

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team had its first home game and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener on Sunday, but could not hold off East Stroudsburg University in the second half, dropping a 16-9 decision on University Field inside Andre Reed Stadium.
 
Kutztown (1-3, 0-1 PSAC) went on a four-goal spurt to takes its first lead of the game (6-5) with 8:01 left in the first half. East Stroudsburg (4-0, 1-0 PSAC) responded with five of the final six goals in the opening stanza to garner a 10-7 lead at halftime.
 
The Warriors carried the momentum over to the second period, scoring within the first two minutes and tacking on three more to build a 14-7 lead. KU wasn't able to light up the scoreboard in the second half until Madison Carlucci converted a free-position attempt with 10 minutes remaining.
 
ESU picked up two more goals before Carlucci closed out the scoring with her second strike of the day.
 
Taylor Sandin led the Maroon and Gold in the scoring department, netting three first-half goals on three shots. The freshman duo of Carlucci and Sarah Gabriele recorded two goals apiece.
 
Taylor Stone and Lauren Huggins tallied the final two goals for KU, while Stone led the Golden Bears with two assists. Jillian Spencer and Cara Lord also dished out an assist each.
 
Courtney O'Neill secured three draw controls from the middle of the field, and joined Kelsey Halligan to lead the defense with three caused turnovers each. Abby Cox made eight saves at goalkeeper for Kutztown.
 
The Warriors held a 28-23 advantage in shots and an 18-9 margin in draw controls.
 
East Stroudsburg received a big game from sophomore Lauren Green, who recorded a career-high five goals along with two assists. Green scored four of ESU's first five goals in the first half. Kaitlynn Wiltraut notched four goals to aid the Warriors attack and netminder Emily Fitzsimmons made nine saves in goal.
 
The Golden Bears next embark on a three-game road trip, starting with West Chester University this Tuesday, March 24 at 4 p.m.
