Softball Falls in Spring Break Finale

HTML Box Score

CLERMONT, Flor. – The Kutztown University softball team closed out its 10-game spring break trip in Florida on Friday, but was unable to overcome a six-run deficit in an eventual 6-2 setback to the University of Charleston.

The Golden Bears (10-4) and Golden Eagles (11-2) are off to two of the hottest starts in the region this year. Charleston showcased its talents on both sides of the ball to consistently apply pressure on Kutztown.

Charleston knocked a two-run homer in the first, hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth, and had three separate RBI hits in the fifth, two coming with two outs, to hold a 6-0 lead through five.

Colleen Smith made the most of her two-out opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. She pulled a two-run home run to right field to cap the scoring at 6-2 on Friday night.

Dominique Ficara suffered the loss in the circle for KU. Mary Kociencki relieved her fellow senior in the fifth inning and allowed one run – none earned – in 2.2 innings. Charleston pitcher Morgan Aguirre moved to 5-0 on the year and allowed four hits with seven strikeouts in the win.

Kutztown returns north and plays at Goldey-Beacom College on Wednesday, March 18 at 2:30 p.m.
