Baseball Closes out North Carolina Trip with Third Win over Barton

WILSON, N.C. – The Kutztown University baseball team concluded a successful season-opening trip in North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Barton College 9-4 for its third win over the Bulldogs in the past two days.
 
Kutztown rallied in the final four innings against Barton (9-11) to keep the streak alive and wrap up the Spring Break trip with a perfect 8-0 record.
 
The Bulldogs got on the board first, scoring three runs over the first three innings powered by a two-run homer in the bottom of the first. The Golden Bears started rolling in the sixth, firing off four runs to take their first lead of the game. KU scored a run apiece in the next two innings, then capped off the afternoon game with three scores in the ninth for the 9-4 win.
 
In the top of the sixth with a man on first and third, Dariel Richardson brought the momentum to KU with an RBI single to center field. Clay Sebesky and Drew DeShong kept the ball rolling with RBI singles, and Brandon Cholish scored the final run of the inning off of a bases-loaded groundout.
 
Brandon Hickey led off the seventh inning with a single to shortstop and would score on a sacrifice fly from Ryan Cox. Ben Eppley singled in the eighth to plate Sebesky for the sixth run.
 
Sebesky and DeShong followed up with RBI doubles in the ninth, with DeShong rounding the bases for the ninth and final score.
 
Kutztown tallied 14 hits from 10 different players. Sebesky led the way with a 3-for-3 day, including two RBI, two runs scored, and a team-high six putouts in the field. DeShong and Thomas Romano were also perfect at the plate, batting 2-for-2 while DeShong and Eppley tallied two RBI apiece.
 
The Maroon and Gold utilized five pitchers in the win. Eric Hartranft, David Brown, and Cameron Mathis each tossed two innings worth with Mathis earning the win. Matt Matricardi faced five batters and Matt Swarmer closed out with four strikeouts for his first save of the season.
