KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Josh Johnson and Anthony Selby combined for 49 points and made 22-of-23 field goals as the Kutztown University men's basketball team never trailed in an 84-68 win over Cheyney University at Keystone Arena on Wednesday night.

Johnson scored a career-high 30 points and shot 14-for-14 from the field. His perfect percentage led KU to a school-record 65.4 shooting percentage from the field, breaking the previous record of 65.2 percent against Chestnut Hill on Dec. 3, 2008. Johnson's 14 field goals without a miss mark the most by a Golden Bear through the last 34 years (dating through the 1980-81 season). He is KU's first 30-point scorer since Micah Fraction's 36 at Bloomsburg on Feb. 23, 2013.

Johnson's 14-for-14 performance marks the best output in all NCAA divisions in the last seven seasons, dating back through the 2008-09 year. Dan Beyer of Division III's Wisconsin-Eau Claire went 15-for-15 on Nov. 16, 2007. Johnson's performances dates back eight seasons in Division II, as Patrick Hannaway of UC-Colorado Springs went 15-for-15 on Nov. 25, 2006.

The Norristown native also notched a double-double with a game-high 14 defensive rebounds. The 30-point night is the first of Johnson's career and his second 20-point night in his last three games. Ironically, Johnson has scored 20+ points in every-other game for the past eight games.

Selby, a first-year Golden Bear, scored a season-high 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting. It marks his fourth double-digit scoring game of the year and nine points higher than his previous-best.

"I didn't think we got (Josh and Anthony) the ball enough in the first half," head coach Bernie Driscoll said. "After shooting 7-for-7 in the first half, we told our guys to put the ball inside, where we had a distinct advantage. I thought we executed that well in the second half.

"Anthony is a great athlete," Driscoll continued on Selby's progress throughout the year. "Once his basketball IQ catches up with his athletic ability, he is going to be a very special player. He has these games in him; but to be great, he has to have these games in him every night. It is just a matter of consistency and slowing down the game for Anthony, but for our big guys to have 49 points tonight is pretty special."

With five games left in the regular season, the Golden Bears (14-9, 11-6 PSAC East) has sealed a winning season for the first time in three years, and the 11th of the last 13 years. With East Stroudsburg's loss at home to Shippensburg on Wednesday night, KU stands one game behind first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division.

First things first, Kutztown can clinch a spot in the playoffs with a win on Saturday at Millersville, or a Bloomsburg loss on Saturday at home against ESU.

Wednesday's victory was a good sign for the Golden Bears after coming off a physically and mentally draining, four overtime setback to West Chester on Saturday. After competing in the longest game in Keystone Arena's 44-year history, it was a good sign for KU to get back out to its winning ways.

"I knew there was a residual effect after that tough loss," Driscoll said. "It took us about a half to get going tonight, but now with five games left and us a game back in the East, we just have to take care of business and remain healthy as a team."

Johnson and Selby were part of a quartet of Golden Bears to combine for 76 of Kutztown's 84 points. Tynell Fortune scored 15 points with two three-pointers and a 5-for-6 outing at the free throw line. Including his three-year career at California University (PA), Fortune has scored 1,191 career points, nine shy of 1,200.

Howard Sellars scored 12 points off the bench to round out the four top scorers. Aiding the attack and setting up KU's scorers was sophomore Austin Beidelman. The Schnecksville native dished out a career-high nine assists with just one turnover. It topped his previous career-high of seven from last year's home game vs. Cheyney, and in his four career games against the Wolves, Beidelman averages 6.5 assists per game. He topped 150 career assists with the career night and stands at 154 in 46 games (43 starts).

Beidelman also had a career-high two blocks, KU's only two of the contest.

For Cheyney (2-20, 1-16), Juwan Mullen led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jerrod Johnson was the other double figure scorer with 11 points.

Kutztown hits the road for four of its final five games of the regular season. A three-game road trip starts at Millersville University on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Pucillo Gymnasium beginning at 1 p.m.
